When you first meet as a couple, there is the excitement of newness and sexual chemistry in the air. You enjoy being together and look forward to spending more time getting to know them. You do everything together and love how compatible you are in this new partnership.
As time goes by, some couples start to spend less time together due to other commitments. The focus now becomes your job, your kids, your hobbies or your individual friendships. Before you know it, you’re both choosing other priorities over your partner. Being together all the time can be stifling in a partnership. However, it is necessary to find a happy medium for love to evolve.
Being best friends will enhance the love you share.
When you do things together as a team, it builds a stronger bond in your partnership. Having some similar interests enables you to have an exciting outlet that you can implement regularly as a couple. This gives you both something to prepare for with enthusiasm. It also prevents boredom and complacency in a long-term relationship.

Turn those shared interests into romantic date nights.
- Prepare a themed dinner together.
- Plan a sunset hike in the hills, at your favourite park, or take a cozy blanket to the beach.
- Take turns organizing a surprise date night every month. Choose something unique that you know your partner would like.
- Be a tourist in your own city. Visit the art museum, aquarium or planetarium.
- Check out the music venues in town.
- Plan a picnic in a scenic park with another couple.
- Book a bed and breakfast weekend in another city close to your home, or enjoy a staycation in your city.
- Have a spa day together.
- Go for a romantic evening walk with a different goal in mind each time. It might mean going for an ice cream or checking out a new cafe in your neighbourhood.
- Be a participant at a local sporting event in your city.
- Go bowling or ice skating together.
- Visit your local thrift stores with a plan for purchasing some fun garden or home decorations.
Take turns introducing new interests into your relationship. Building shared interests creates stronger bonds.
Implement new ideas that you have never tried before. Learning new things as a couple will deepen the emotional bond between you. When you play together as a couple, there is less conflict to deal with. You’re having fun together and sharing new adventures. You are making long-lasting memories which will take away the mundane repetition that many relationships face.
This is where compromise is important in a partnership. You both must be open to trying different things. Shared interests can include creating fun challenges as a couple. Cycle to another town close to your home or sign up for a fitness goal, like a charity walk/run. Plan a vacation to a cooking school in Italy or a river cruise through Europe. It’s always rewarding to have an exhilarating adventure marked down on the calendar.
When you make goals as a couple, it also improves your communication skills. Collaborating as a team helps you to connect on a deeper level. You are continually learning new things about each other. This also helps you evolve on the same path as a couple and keeps things exciting. When you playfully grow together, you stay together. You always have things to talk about and look forward to sharing.

It is important to have a balance in your relationship.
Having balance in your relationship means having some alone time and private moments. You still want to maintain some individuality. Being authentic to who you are should never get lost in your relationship. Having a few separate interests is healthy and necessary for living your best life.
Implementing shared interests, while having some individual interests, will always keep your relationship in alignment. When this is reciprocated, you both will have an appreciated understanding. This not only strengthens your partnership, but it also takes away negative complacency that affects many relationships over time. Put in a little energy each day to nurture your relationship. Making this a priority will always keep your love in a happy place.
