Chris Bumstead’s Split
Chris Bumstead revealed his most recent offseason workout split in an interview with Raw Nutrition about six months ago. It is an unconventional bros split consisting of an 8-day cycle of three days on, one day off, three days on, one day off, and continuously repeating that.
With his current offseason split:
- Day 1 is for a Quad-dominant Leg workout.
- Day 2 is for the Chest with some Triceps.
- Day 3 is for the Back with some Biceps.
- Day 4 is a rest day.
- Day 5 is for Shoulders with some Chest.
- Day 6 is for the Hamstring with some Back.
- Day 7 is for the Arms.
- Day 8 is to rest.
Chris Bumstead’s Offseason Workout
Following the 8-day cycle for offseason workouts, Chris’ workout routine will be quite similar to this:
1. Quad-dominant Leg Workouts
- Leg Extensions (Drop Set) for two sets of 20 reps.
- Smith Machine Squats for two sets of 6-10 reps.
- Leg Tri Set of Unilateral Leg Presses (for three sets of 8-10 reps), Sissy Squat (for three sets of 12-15 reps), and the Seated Calf Raise (for three sets of 10-12 reps).
He kicks off day 1 with a few warmup sets of leg extensions and the adduction machine. For the Smith Machine Squats, he starts with a few low rep warmup sets, has one set with the heaviest weight possible, and then reduces the weight for the second set.
2. Chest with some Triceps
- Incline Dumbbell press for two sets of 8-10 reps.
- Incline Dumbbell Fly for two sets of 8-10 reps.
- Hammer Strength Machine Incline Press (Drop Set) for two sets of 6-10 reps.
- Pec Deck for three sets of 15 reps.
- EZ Bar Skull Crushers for two sets of 8-10 reps.
- Pushups for two sets till failure.
He does two working sets on the Hammer Strength Machine with a drop set for both. He also starts the second set with the same weight as the drop set of the first working set.
3. Back with some Biceps
- Close Grip Underhand Lat Pulldown for three sets of 10-12 reps.
- Chest-supported Dumbell Row for two sets of 8-10 reps.
- Chest-supported T-Bar Row (Drop Set) for two sets of 8-10 reps.
- Machine Chest-supported Row for two sets of 10-12 reps.
- Cable Lat Extension for two sets of 10-12 reps
- Machine Preacher Curls for two sets of 10-12 reps.
With the Chest-supported T-Bar Row, it is important to maintain a neutral grip throughout and perform the drop set on the second set. He changes grips and angles to target the muscle differently for the Machine Chest-supported row.
4. Rest.
5. Shoulders with some Chest
- Seated Dumbbell Shoulder Press for two sets of 6-10 reps.
- Machine Shoulder Press (Drop Set) for three reps of 6-10 reps.
- Seated Dumbbell Lateral Raise (Drop Set) for two sets of 8-10 reps.
- Machine Lateral Raise of two sets of 10-12 reps.
- A superset of Reverse Peck Deck (for two sets of 10-12 reps) and Machine Fly (for two sets of 10-12 reps).
Warm-ups here include some band dislocations, as well as internal and external rotations!
6. Hamstring and Back
- Lying Leg Curls for two sets of 8-10 reps.
- Deadlifts for two seats of 4-8 reps.

- EZ Bar Preacher curls (Drop Set) for three sets of 8-10 reps.
- Dumbbell Curls for two sets of 10-12 reps.
- Cable Cross-body Triceps for two sets of 10-15 reps.
- Low Pulley Cable Curls (Drop Set) for two sets of 10-12 reps.
Chris starts with his elbows facing up to ensure he hits his triceps with the rope cable press downs. With the dumbbell bicep curls, he focuses on rotating his wrist outward. Finally, he uses a V-bar handle for the Low Pulley Cable Curls.
8. Rest.
To power his offseason workout, he makes sure to consume about 5,000 calories made up of around 300 grams of protein, 650 grams of carbs, and 150 grams of fat everyday.
Is Chris Bumstead on Steroids?
So, is the 5x Mr Olympia Classic Physique natty or is he on steroids? Many have doubted that he is natural due to his high muscle mass and extremely low fat. He has also exhibited some signs of steroid use, like red skin, hair loss, and a bit of acne. Of course, all of that is only circumstantial evidence and does not mean anything for a fact.
But in a 2022 video, he admitted to taking testosterone (natural testosterone is a muscle-building steroid). At the time, he confessed to doing 200 milligrams a week and admitted that he could go as high as 500 milligrams at his off-season peak. But he also said that he did not want others to rely on it, and he comes off it once a year.
In the same video, he stressed the importance of healthy living, a good diet, and training before the use of compounds. He shared that when he was younger and just getting into the sport, he used about four or five but has since cut down to just one or two, prioritising his health.
Therefore, a conclusive answer is no. Chris Bumstead is not entirely natural. He has used steroids and most likely continues to use a few, but he is reducing his use and will likely continue to reduce his use.
