G-SHOCK Updates Mudmaster Watch with GWG-B1000

G-SHOCK has been making mud-resistant timepieces for almost as long as it’s been a company. The DW-5500C debuted in 1985 and was colloquially called the Mudman by fans, but it wasn’t until ten years later that the Mudman got an official series by the Casio sub-brand. And then in 2015, the Mudman got an evolution with the Mudmaster, ref. GWG-1000, which sported the first analog-digital hybrid interface of any mud-resistant timepiece. Well, the GWG-1000 looks like it’s getting replaced by the GWG-B1000 (notice the letter “B”) next month, a bigger and badder upgrade of the legendary watch.

Taking design cues from the more premium and slightly smaller GWG-2000, the B1000 combines the best of both worlds. At 58.7mm across, it has a wider diameter with a more protected crown than its predecessor. However, it’s 4mm shorter and 2mm thinner. And compared to the GWG-2000, it’s about 4oz heavier. Sporting a Carbon Core Guard case, which combines carbon fiber and resin, the new Mudmaster features a stainless steel bezel ring with DLC coating that makes it extra durable. The mud-resistant construction puts cylindrical guards on all the buttons and the shafts are given gasket linings. This also allows it to be resistant to vibrations like the GWG-1000.

Available in black, burgundy, and green upon launch, the GWG-B1000 is the first G-SHOCK watch that combines three of the brand’s hallmarks in one model: Tough Solar power, Triple Sensor (with altimeter, barometer, compass, and thermometer features), and a Bluetooth link to your smartphone. There are two new subdials on this new Mudmaster as well. One indicates the altitude and barometric pressure differential, while the other points to a specific location recorded on the Bearing Memory feature on your phone app. From the GG-B100 model, the B1000 also provides data on sunrise/sunset time.

Released next month, the Mudmaster GWG-B1000 will be priced at $800 from G-SHOCK’s website.
