It’s been decades since we’ve seen De Tomaso rolling new production models off the assembly line, and while 2019 looked promising with the P72 prototype, Covid had other plans for the storied Italian car maker.
Inspired by the one-off P70, a collaboration between Carroll Shelby and Alejandro de Tomaso, the P72 was supposed to be the brand’s return to the limelight. Now, with the pandemic firmly in the rearview, De Tomaso has revv’d up its plan to bring the P72 supercar back into production, and today brings us our first look at the carbon-clad beauty.
Powered by Ford
De Tomaso has a long history with the folks at Ford, with the famed Detroit auto maker taking a majority ownership stake in the company back in 1971 and subsequently being used to power both the iconic Mangusta and Pantera from the ‘60s and ‘70s. And while the Ford ownership arrangement only lasted a few short years (circa 1974), De Tomaso has once again decided to tap Ford to power their newest supercar.
The Ford-sourced, mid-mounted supercharged 5.0-liter V8 pumps out 750 horsepower and 664 lb-ft of torque to the rear wheels through a 6-speed manual transmission; a decision that’s sure to appease automotive enthusiasts (ourselves included) the world over.
Clad in Carbon Fiber
Although customers will receive a fully-painted version, De Tomaso’s chassis 001 unveiling reveals a retro inspired body sporting a beautiful naked carbon fiber finish. And there’s plenty more where that came from.
Teaming up with the German firm HWA, the P72 body sits atop a carbon fiber monocoque chassis that’s been hand-assembled by a small team to ensure no detail is overlooked upon delivery.
An Interior Inspired by Jewelry
Opening the doors reveals an interior that’s perhaps more head turning than the exterior, feeling like something you’d find in an art gallery rather than a road-faring sports car. And that was exactly what De Tomaso was aiming for, claiming the interior was inspired by the world of jewelry.
The ergonomic, designer-inspired bucket seats are crafted from a mixture of carbon fiber and high-end cream leather, and the six custom-made, copper-colored gauges running along the interior dashboard are nothing short of a show piece. There’s even a fully exposed, matching copper-colored shifter mechanism to boot.
