Zodiac & Rowing Blazers’ Super Sea Wolf World Time GMT Was Inspired by ‘Trading Places’

If you were to watch just one Eddie Murphy movie over and over again, 1983’s Trading Places would give you the most to think about. In the John Landis satire, Murphy plays a poor street hustler who, through a contrived series of events, swaps societal roles with a wealthy businessman played by Dan Aykroyd. While giving us plenty to laugh about, the film speaks on many topics, but mainly the stark contrast of vastly different socio-economic statuses and the ability to adapt (or fail to do so) when your situation is changed. At one point, Aykroyd pawns off his very expensive ($6,955 in ‘83 cash) Rouchefoucauld world timer for just $50. It’s here where Zodiac got the inspiration for its latest GMT watch, with the help of style brand Rowing Blazers.

While it looks nothing like the haute horology piece from Trading Places (“THE sports watch of the ‘80s), the new Super Sea Wolf World Time GMT does include the cities on its blue world time bezel that were mentioned by Aykroyd, including Monte Carlo, Beverly Hills, London, Paris, Rome, and, yes, even Gstaad (only London and Paris have been included on previous Zodiac World Time references), for a total of 27 global cities. The blue bezel surrounds a black dial with a white 24-hour GMT track on the outside. Inside the 40mm case with 200m of water resistance is a Swiss-made STP7-20 automatic GMT movement.

Zodiac has always displayed an affinity for heritage yet never forgets to have some fun with its watchmaking either. Teaming up with Rowing Blazers for this release just makes sense. In addition to putting its logo above the 6 o’clock position, the brand adds its signature zig-zag pattern to the #tide ocean plastic fabric strap, which comes complimentary along with the stainless steel bracelet.

Also unlike the Trading Places timepiece, the Super Sea Wolf World Time GMT comes at a fraction of the price. Available for $2,195, the Zodiac x Rowing Blazers watch is limited to just 282 pieces and can be purchased from either of the brands’ websites.
