Vacheron Constantin Finally Made the Historiques 222 in Stainless Steel

It’s crazy to think in an industry dominated by stainless steel watches that one of Vacheron Constantin’s most beloved models, the 222, has never been made with that material until today. It’s also crazy that the 222 was developed as a celebration of the iconic watchmaker’s 222nd anniversary… 48 years ago!

A Legend, But Not in the Making

Part of the Swiss Holy Trinity (along with Audemars Piguet and Patek Philippe), VC has a history dating back to 1755, making it the third-oldest watch brand in the world. Over the centuries, their timepieces have been worn by kings, popes, and celebrities alike. With some models eclipsing the $100k mark, the $32,000 steel version is not only more than half the price of the 18k gold version but is on the (relatively) more affordable end of the VC spectrum.

A Sportier Approach

Celebrating its now 270th anniversary, VC has tapped the same “Jumbo” version of the Historiques 222 watch, which itself was a 45th anniversary of the original 222 from 1977. Both releases came with yellow gold cases but fans wanted a steel version for obvious reasons. First, the steel aesthetic is much sportier, plus it would undoubtedly drop the price tag down quite a bit.

To add to the sporty style, the dial color is in a nice matte blue with white gold hour markers and a date window. Some detractors might wish that this were more monochromatic like the gold version, which also had a golden dial. However, if the raison d’être is versatility of style, then blue is the obvious way to go.

Breaking Down the Specs

This steel version of the Historiques 222 has the same specs as the gold version. That means a 37mm case size with an ultra-thin 7.95mm case thickness (which is a hair thicker than the ‘77 watch), a fluted bezel, and an integrated bracelet with a butterfly deployment clasp (the clasp was also an addition from the ‘77 watch). Having a steel case and matching bracelet, the new watch is also a bit lighter than the gold versions, which might be the other major win this time around, aside from the price.

Behind the exhibition window in the caseback, you’ll see the Hallmark of Geneva-certified Caliber 2455/2, an in-house automatic movement, which isn’t their best caliber in terms of accuracy with just under 3Hz, but this is still an impressive movement for the thinness alone at just 3.6mm.

Originally made for the brand’s 222nd anniversary in 1977, the 222 was revived again in 2022. However, the watch has always been made in 18k gold. The new stainless steel version halves the price tag and also feels lighter on the wrist.
