Toyota Unveils Retro-Style Land Cruiser 70 SUV

Only days after revealing its all-new neo-retro-style Land Cruiser 250, Toyota had now pulled the over off of yet another all-new retro-inspired Land Cruiser model — this time drawing inspiration from ‘80s and ‘90s era SUVs — with the throwback-style 2024 Toyota Land Cruiser 70.

Sporting a design that’s heavily modeled after Toyota’s 1980s era 60 Series LC Model, the new Land Cruiser 70 features an unmistakably retro-style appearance with body bodywork, metal door handles, and even a retro-inspiredset of 10-arm wheels. Despite the throwback nature of the SUV, the Land Cruiser 70 does manage to incorporate several modern items into its design, including upgraded off-road-style bumpers, flared fenders at all four corners, and circular LED headlights. The interior of the vehicle is equal parts modern and spartan, with an overall design that — like the rest of the SUV — was designed with utility in mind.

At 73.6” wide, 75.6” tall, and 192.5” long (with a 107.5” wheelbase), the new Land Cruiser 70 is slightly smaller than its 250 Series counterpart, though is actually expected to boast better go-anywhere abilities — at least in their respective base model form. Powering Toyota’s new throwback SUV is a 2.8-liter direct-injection turbodiesel inline-four engine. Mated to a six-speed automatic transmission, this turbodiesel four-banger puts down a 201hp and 369ft-lbs of torque. Like the original Land Cruiser models, the new 70 Series strays from the luxury SUV space and instead stands as a purely utilitarian machine, engineered for workhorse duties and off-roading rather than providing a plush platform for almost exclusively on-road commuting.

While pricing has yet to be revealed, the company has announced that the 2024 Toyota Land Cruiser 70 will be reserved exclusively for the Japanese market — though with any luck, this will change in future model years as we imagine the 70 model would be welcomed with open arms on U.S. shores.
