Back in 2018, Timex decided to re-release its classic ‘60s model, the Marlin Automatic. This reissue was the brand’s first mechanical watch in over three decades and even got the addition of a 24-hour sub-dial — a feature typically reserved for higher-end timepieces. However, this Marlin Automatic weighed in at under $300! Today, Timex is pushing the model even further back to the space age with this retro-futuristic version of the mid-century icon.
Starting by dropping the case size down a notch to 38mm (the previous edition was 39mm), the Marlin Jet wows us with its new domed Hesalite crystal, which stretches over the bezel entirely to blend seamlessly with the sides of the brushed stainless steel case. The bezel itself features a slanted orientation and depicts the “Marlin” name at the bottom, while parallel horizontal grooves encircle the rest of it for a serious vintage aesthetic. This concentric circle pattern is a motif across the timepiece and is featured on the crown and caseback as well.
As for the top of the case, only the lugs are exposed, while the back of the case features an exhibition caseback that reveals the Japanese-made automatic movement through a domed crystal that matches the front. Just like the new editions of the Marlin from last year, the Marlin Jet also sports the 24-hour sub-dial at the 9 o’clock spot. Colored in silver-white and slightly concave, the dial itself sports a black crosshair pattern in the center that harkens back to mid-century watches as well. For a touch of modern-day watchmaking, Timex thought to adorn the Jet with a blue woven perlon strap.
Perhaps the best part of the Marlin Jet — as with any Timex — is its price. At just $289, this timepiece is a fraction of what a luxury example would cost you. Head over to Timex’s website to get one for yourself.
