Blurring the line between truck, tractor, big-rig, the Mercedes Unimog first debuted in 1948, and though 75 years have passed since its introduction, the Unimog continues to stand as an automotive icon, offering some of the best off-road capabilities of any production vehicle. As such, in addition to obviously lending themselves to off-grid workhorse duties, these massive lifted rigs are also a go-to platform for individuals looking to build out oversized off-road projects, such as this blacked-out, spare-no-expense mid ‘80s era Unimog U1700 build.
Starting life as a 1986 Mercedes-Benz U1700 Unimog, this heavily-modified rig has been treated to an extensive restoration before receiving a series of upgrades — work totaling more than $166,000. Originally utilized as a Kildare Fire Service vehicle before being acquired bu its current owner, the rig is powered by a rebuilt and upgraded 6.0-liter inline-six Diesel engine with selectable four-wheel drive. The engine comes mated to a gearbox that features eight forward speeds, eight reverse speeds with low range and differential lock options.
Cloaked in a coat of Obsidian Black Metallic, the outside of the vehicle has been treated to a host of off-road-focused components such as an LED light bar, LED auxiliary lights, twin snorkels, a custom pickup bed, a U4000 grille, a reversing camera, mudguards, a custom stainless-steel exhaust, exterior toolboxes, and a full-size spare wheel carrier. Riding on a massive set of 20” Hutchinson wheels wrapped in Michelin beefy Michelin XZL tires, the entire vehicle is constructed around a professionally shortened chassis with new rear tub that now supports a custom-raised cabin. Trimmed in custom quilted Bridge of Weir black leather upholstery, the interior of the vehicle now sports heated front seats, full cabin soundproofing, a sunroof, a leather roof lining. and a Bluetooth-compatible Blaupunkt CD player.
Boasting only 35,522 miles on the odo, this 1986 Mercedes-Benz Unimog U1700 is currently up for auction on Collecting Cars, where, as of the time of writing, bidding has reached £55,000 (~ $68,926) with five days remaining on the sale. The sale also includes a 12-month Warrantywise warranty.
