The James Brand’s Wells Is Its First-Ever Flipper Knife

Since 2012, renowned everyday carry purveyor The James Brand has dominated the realm of sleek, style-forward gear with its minimalist pocket knives, pens, carabiners, and other tools. Its range has never been wide, but it has been thoughtful and meticulously assembled, focusing on craftsmanship and design rather than abundance. Believe it or not, despite rarely covering the same ground twice, the Portland-based EDC outfit has never come out with a back flipper knife. That is, until today.

As its first-ever true flipper knife, the Wells deploys its CPM Magnacut stainless steel blade super quickly compared to its standard folding knife counterparts. Black flippers double as a sort of fidget tool, with this one utilizing stainless steel caged ball bearings and a button lock for safety. Named after the eponymous stone projectile points from Texas, the knife sports a sheepsfoot straight-edge blade that stretches 2.875” long and closes up to be 7.25” long. The 63 HRC steel hardness also boasts considerable corrosion resistance. In total, the tool weighs just 3.3oz, in part thanks to its aerospace-grade heat-treated aluminum 6061 scales. For now, the Wells is only available in a right-hand carry orientation with an easy-to-use stainless steel pocket clip.

Not wanting to shoehorn this type of knife into its range too hastily, The James Brand waited several years to make its very first flipper. However, the time just wasn’t right until now, when the brand could finally craft one according to its own standards. Falling in line with the rest of its arsenal, the Wells is certainly minimalist, available in either all-black or all-silver (with an anodized aluminum handle and stainless steel blade) iterations.

What’s more, the Wells flipper was designed, machined, and built in the United States. It can be yours for $439 on The James Brand’s website.
