Though it’s still primarily thought of as a knife-making operation, The James Brand has really cemented itself as an bonafide everyday carry brand over the last few years with a steady stream of blade, carabiner, pen, watch, and accessory releases. For its latest drop, TJB has revisited the communication realm with the all-new James Brand Bolen Pen. 

The Basics

The Bolen is a high-end take on an everyday carry pen that combines TJB’s existing design language with a new spring-loaded twist deployment mechanism. In total, the pen spans 5.3” from tip to tip and clocks in a 0.3” in diameter. The entire thing weighs less than an ounce, too. 

Material Selection

The vast majority of the Bolen has been precision-machined from top-shelf grade 5 titanium billet. This includes the pen main body/barrel, as well as the pen’s pocket clip which has been milled from matching 6AL4V — not unlike the billet pocket clips found on some of The James Brand’s more premium knives like The Barnes. 

The Mechanism

At the heart of The Bolen is an all-new spring-loaded twist deployment mechanism. Requiring two hands to use — eliminating the possibility of an accidental deployment — this new mechanism is incredibly smooth, plus is substantially quieter than normal click mechanisms. This twist mechanism also deploys the pen’s black Parker-style G2 ink cartridge. 

The Details

The Bolen maintains TJB’s signature dot grip pattern, bolstering grip while undeniably bringing a few style points to the table. This dot motif is found on a slew of TJB’s existing products, from its Burwell and Stilwell pens to its Cache River bit driver. The very top of the pen has also been bestowed with The James Brand’s paint-filled electric moss degree mark.
