We won’t tell anyone if we ever win the lottery, but there will be signs. Take, for example, this rumour we once heard about Tom Ford. At his London residence, the renowned designer allegedly gives his butler strict instructions to scent certain rooms at specific times of the day, with fragrances particularly suited for different purposes.
We imagine it would work like spritzing something energising and uplifting in the breakfast room to start the day, then something invigorating in the home office around mid-morning to improve focus, moving into a calmer, relaxed mood in the lounge for the late afternoon, and then setting the tone for the evening activities around the dinner table or drawing room.
If you want to create your own fragrant personal space, there are a raft of new fragrances that deserve a sniff. This season’s launches include brilliant comebacks for nineties hitmakers Issey Miyake and Calvin Klein, the perfect tipple from Kilian, and a dark and mysterious number from Tom Ford, the man who always knows how to get the party started.
Brioni Sauve
Suave comes from the efforts of a trio of perfumers: Michel Almairac, Romain Almairac (his son) and Jérôme Epinette, who worked together on the fifth fragrance from luxury outfitter Brioni.
With a leathery, amber scent, Sauve is perfect for this time of year, when Jack Frost is nipping, and you want to shroud yourself from the cold.
The bottle is chestnut in hue, and the eau de parfum opens with zesty tangerine, pink peppercorn, and cardamom. Leather and vetiver mingle in the heart over a base of smooth sandalwood and salted amber.
It’s as relaxed and elegant as one would expect from an Italian tailor.

Czech & Speake Amber 7
This heady amber from London perfumery Czech & Speake may incite a Marmite response; lovers will absolutely love it, and haters will probably find it a bit too much. Which is commendable, because scents that please everyone tend to inspire no one.
Rich and enveloping, Amber 7 opens with a herbal, citrus blend of lime, eucalyptus, rosemary and bergamot. It then reveals a spicy ginger heart over a drydown of benzoin, vanilla and cistus.
It’s the kind of scented calling card that announces your presence as soon as you enter a room and leaves a note to say you were there.

Horace Rose Oud
The brief called for a rose fragrance as elegant and bold as Bryan Ferry in the peak 1980s ‘Avalon’ video. Handmade in Grasse, the perfume capital of the world, Oud Rose marries rose geranium, rosemary and blackcurrant with a fresh heart of Damascus rose and patchouli over a smoky oud accord, Cypriol essence and creamy yellow sandalwood.
It’s green, woody and fresh, while also earthy and intense, and it goes perfectly with a white dinner jacket and retro tunes.

Kilian Old Fashioned
It’s hard not to want to sip Kilian’s new scent, Old Fashioned, as it smells so intoxicating. Like the bartender has just handed over a perfectly prepared drink, captured in a cut crystal tumbler, the first spritz left us positively parched for five o’clock.
Whet your whistle with opening notes of wheat absolute and davana over ultra-concentrated cedarwood essence, everlasting absolute, styrax and tolu balm.
Pretty soon, we’ll be sneaking a whiff with lunch, and before long, we’ll need a hit with breakfast. Expect to develop a serious habit for Old Fashioned.

Bentley BECOME
The Bentley universe continues to grow beyond the confines of rarified automobiles, with swanky furniture, ultra residences in Miami, the singular Macallan Horizon, and, for the most treasured customers, a cross-country experience including a stay over at the former CEO’s country house outside Crewe. On the other hand, the new scent, Bentley BECOME, is so well-designed it looks out of reach, but the price is definitely accessible.
The composition by perfumer Aliénor Massenet takes its cues from the sparkling notes of a gin and tonic. It opens with a citrus burst of sweet orange, bergamot and fresh black pepper oil over middle notes of Virginian cedarwood, myrrh absolute and juniper berry, with base notes of Madagascan vetiver, patchouli essence and santal album oil rounding it out.

Calvin Klein Ck One Essence
Whether you had the original nineties phenomenon or not, its worth checking out the latest Calvin Klein scent, Ck One Essence. Created by Alberto Morillas, the mastermind behind Ck One, Ck All and Ck Everyone, Essence is a concentrated version of the brand DNA, reflecting Morillas’ craftsmanship for refreshing, aquatic-style scents.

On a sliding scale of BOSS Bottled scents, Absolu sits at the strongest end of the spectrum, recognisable by its gold lid and dipped gold base.

Tom Ford Private Blend Black Lacquer
Embrace your dark side this season with the glossy, gothic depths of Tom Ford’s stunning new scent, Black Lacquer. An inky, slick black lacquer accord meets notes of Makassar ebony wood and dark peony, with hints of leather and birch.
Intensely smoky, with resinous notes of incense, it lasts forever on the skin and suits colder weather down to the ground.

Issey Miyake Le Sel D’Issey
The French excel at hand-panning sel, so it’s fitting that perfumer Quentin Bisch uses the power of salt as the inspiration for Le Sel D’Issey. Marine woody notes of salt accord, ginger, marine seaweed, sand vetiver, cedarwood and oakmoss combine to leave quite an impression.
Fresh, mineralic yet warm and with a touch of spice, as the makers of one of the most popular men’s aquatic scents ever created, Le Sel D’Issey is a worthy newcomer to the fold.
It also has impressive longevity for an eau de toilette, with one spritz on the wrist projecting well into the next day.

Versace Eros Energy
Our first impression of Versace’s Eros Energy is like a honey-lemon cough drop. An aromatic citrus melange of lemon, blood orange, grapefruit, lime, Sicilian Bergamot and Mandarin orange opens the fragrance. White amber, blackcurrant and pink pepper follow, over base notes of patchouli, musk and oak moss.
It’s warm and lively on a cold, dreary day and has good longevity, unusual for a citrus scent.

DSquared2 Icon Pour Homme
From the house of the denim-clad Canadian twins Dean and Dan Caten comes Icon Pour Homme, an aromatic combination of citrus, ginger, clary sage, cedarwood and patchouli.
It’s warm, a touch sweet, and overall very pleasant, even if it doesn’t quite live up to the name. To be iconic, you have to offer something new and original, and this is a reassuringly safe bet.
