The Best Athletic Greens (AG1) Alternatives That Won’t Break The Bank

Thanks to every health podcaster, Athletic Greens (or AG1, since its rebrand) has become one of the most popular health supplements. You’ve probably seen pictures of people taking the “green water” all over your Instagram feed or heard about it on your favourite podcast at the prominent health drink with 75 vitamin minerals and lots more.

But here’s the problem: it’s ridiculously expensive. At $99 USD / $150 AUD for a bag with 30 servings, it doesn’t seem to provide enough value for its price.

Here, we’ve provided a selection of equally healthy green supplement drinks that can serve as Athletic Greens alternatives. Most of them are not only cheaper, but they serve a higher quantity.

Our selection

Our selection comprises geen supplements that we have used religiously for the past 20 years and other products that our friends and people on the internet have spoken highly of. Before including any product on this list, a staff member of DMARGE tested the product for at least two weeks to judge its effects.

We selected the best six alternatives we tested, considering taste, price, value, brand reputation, and other factors. If you also think that despite the hype, Athletic Greens (AG1) is too expensive, or you can get better value from other products, we hope this list helps.

Tropeaka Superfood Greens + D

Tropeaka Superfood Greens + D

VERDICT: One of the fastest ways to get all your required daily vitamins and nutrients in one place.

Pros

  • It is great for a cleanse.
  • It does not contain any genetically modified organisms
  • It does not contain gluten, dairy, or soy.
  • Great energy source.
  • It supports your immune system.
  • It uses a natural flavour to enhance taste.

Cons

  • It does not always mix well, and you may have to stir the bottle occasionally.

So many factors make Tropeaka’s Superfood Greens + D an incredible Athletic Green Alternative. With 12 Alkaline superfoods like Kale, Barley Grass, Bitter Melon, and Wheatgrass for ingredients, and a ton of Natural Vitamin D, enough to supply 50% of the recommended daily intake of Vitamin D in one serving (based on the Australian recommended daily intake for Vitamin D), it is one transformative product.

After using this for over two weeks, we noticed that we felt stronger most of the time, enjoyed a clear mind, and even had better bowel movements. This product can enrich your life to help you feel tremendously better.

Not to go off listing ingredients to you, but it also contains a remarkable amount of iron, the full range of essential amino acids, as well as Vitamins A, B, C, E, and K. Naturally, it is easy to take – like Athletic Green – and the recommended dosage is two spoons into 250 ml of water, smoothie, or a juice. Much to its credit, it doesn’t taste horrible but has a certain natural flavour of pineapple and mint.

Paradise Herbs ORAC Energy Greens

  • No Genetically Modified Organisms in their ingredients.
  • It helps you enjoy all the benefits of a healthy lifestyle.

Cons

  • The taste and smell require some getting used to.

Consistency is key if you intend to enjoy ORAC Energy Greens’s benefits fully. It is perfect for people with a typically unhealthy lifestyle, who often forget to eat proper and healthy meals for days.

Country Farms Super Greens

Country Farms Super Greens

VERDICT: We love the different, exciting flavours, but some don’t taste as good as others.

Pros

  • Available in three flavours.
  • It improves immune health.
  • Boosts energy levels and improves focus.
  • Low calories.
  • Affordable price point.

Cons

  • Taste depends on the flavour. We think the Chocolate flavour has the best taste.
  • It might be too grainy for some and require extra blending.

Country Farms is an American brand, and as the name implies, it focuses on growing, transforming, and providing fresh farm fruits and vegetables as supplements. Since 1975, the brand has aimed to grow food and vegetables of high nutritional value organically. Today, it relies on science to develop those organically grown products into supplements.

Country Farms Super Greens is one supplement that has resulted from the brand’s aim. The brand’s research reveals that only 1 in 10 Americans consume the recommended fruits and vegetables daily. And while that is an American statistic, the rates are similar worldwide. The Super Greens powder makes it easier to consume the recommended amount of fruits and vegetables every day in just one serving.

Containing probiotics, fruit whole blends, phytonutrients, and enzymes, it is almost the ultimate supplement to boost health and vitality. Available in three flavours, Natural, Berry, and Chocolate, it can be a snack anytime during the day or an energy boost before a workout. Our overall impression of the product was that its other flavours made it a bit exciting to try, but above that, no spectacular factor distinguishes it from others. However, it was just as effective.

Emrald Labs Greens+

Emrald Labs Greens+

VERDICT: Another perfectly good Athletic Greens alternative.

Pros

  • Energy booster.
  • It improves digestive system health.
  • Multiple flavours.
  • It helps your skin glow.
  • It reduces inflammation.

Cons

  • Taste depends on flavour.

Emrald Labs is another globally renowned health and fitness supplements brand. With Greens+, they provide superfoods, antioxidants, and nourishing enzymes in one 300 ml bottle of water mixed with a 10g scoop of the product.

Superfoods included in that formula are sweet potato, alfalfa, kale, broccoli, and strawberry. Like many of the products here, and just like Athletic Green (to which all these are alternatives), it promises to improve your health significantly and is made especially for those who cannot enjoy the required diet of fruits and vegetables every day.

Like the other alternatives we’ve discussed, Greens+ was equally effective, although we did not notice the effects as quickly as others. But after 2 to 3 weeks, we began to see remarkable changes like radiant skin, better digestive system health, higher energy levels, and better immunity.  But this also comes in different and exciting flavours.

Swiish Supergreen Superfood Powder

Swiish Supergreen Superfood Powder

VERDICT: Packed (with ingredients) superfood powder. One of the most beneficial available.

Pros

  • Convenient packaging.
  • It contains over 40 superfood ingredients.
  • Highly effective.

Cons

  • It doesn’t mix easily or very well.
  • The taste is not objectively great.

With over 40 superfood ingredients, the Swiish Supergreen Superfood Powder Is designed to provide necessary supplements, but it is important to remember that it is not intended to replace meals. The ingredients are heavily backed by scientific research to produce the desired results, so it is no surprise that the Supergreen Superfood powder is so effective.

Containing mushrooms, adaptogens, fruits, leaf vegetables, and probiotic strains, it is one of the most packed superfood powders. The probiotic strains in the supplement have been proven to strengthen the gut microbiome while diversifying gut flora. This improves digestive functions and even soothing anxiety while encouraging stress adaptation.

Its medical mushrooms – shiitake and maitake – are known for regulating blood sugar, improving immune cells, and promoting cognitive health. These different ingredients contribute their benefits, making this superfood powder one of the most beneficial and potent.

We thoroughly enjoyed using this for its smooth texture. The benefits were just as the manufacturers advertised, and we could not be more pleased.

True Protein Greens Superfood

True Protein Greens Superfood

VERDICT: Keeps being healthy simple while tasting great.

Pros

  • It tastes and mixes great (if you’re used to green powders).
  • Available in multiple flavours.
  • Alkaline properties.
  • It reduces inflammation.
  • Boosts energy.

Cons

  • Taste requires getting used to.

Compared to some other products on this list, True Protein Greens Superfood keeps things simple with just 11 individual ingredients to make up its formula. It also has five natural grass powders: Barley, Wheat, Alfalfa, Oat and Spelt. Most of the other ingredients are familiar and natural, like matcha green tea and vitamin C powder. There are no complex chemical elements. Just simple and healthy.

The ingredients have been carefully selected and combined to promote a balanced pH environment for the body. But they also contain some vital nutrients and minerals, with even antioxidants to boost health. The product does not particularly state any particular benefits to expect from using it, so we’ll just inform you what we experienced after two weeks of using this superfood supplement.

The effects were also not remarkably different. It boosted energy levels and improved gut health, but those were the only effects we really noticed. However, we did feel more healthy (possibly a placebo effect).

How we tested

To determine the best Athletic Green alternatives, we considered the following:

  • Ingredient profile: We sought to select only products with a wide variety of ingredients. However, the elements also had to be high-quality and sourced from organic sources. Finally, the product label had to be transparent, listing the ingredients and in what quantity each was present.
  • Nutritional Content: Each product had to contain several essential vitamins and minerals. Probiotics, digestive enzymes, antioxidants, herbs, and adaptogens are also advantageous in any product.
  • Price: The cost per serving and the value of a package, depending on the number of servings it could provide.
  • Brand Reputation: We only selected products from reputable brands with a history of reliable and healthy products.
  • Taste and Texture: While the taste is often subjective or dependent on flavour, we tried to select only those with the best flavours and texture.
