The 5 Best New Spirits Of 2024: Whisky, Cognac, Tequila

The global spirits industry has certainly not been resting on its laurels in 2024. Many new releases from established brands and newcomers alike have been bottled and put to market across every category.

Here are five of the best new releases to debut this year. Whether you’re partial to Scotch or American whiskey, tequila or Cognac – there’s something for all tastes and budgets.

Bushmills | 15 Years Old Cognac Cask Finish

Irish whiskey is having something of a renaissance, and Bushmills, the oldest legal distillery in Ireland, is leading the way with some innovative releases. None more so than this fabulous 15-year-old expression that joins its core range.

Bushmills’ signature triple-distilled single malt has been matured in first-fill and re-fill ex-bourbon barrels before a luxurious 12-month finish in French oak ex-Cognac casks sourced from France.

This whiskey offers great bang for your buck and will launch as a UK exclusive before being introduced to other world markets. Expect waves of vanilla sweetness and a complex mélange of dried fruits—think of apple, raisin, sultana and pineapple. These sit alongside further notes of golden syrup, candied orange peel and delicate warming spices such as gingerbread and cinnamon bark.

This whiskey is a true highlight.

Rémy Martin | Coupe 300 Ans

Cognac houses do not come much bigger and older than Rémy Martin. Founded in 1724, the brand celebrates its 300th anniversary this year and has released an exquisite, limited-edition Cognac to commemorate the occasion.

The prestigious bottling has been created using Rémy’s unique Réserve Perpétuelle – a collection of eaux-de-vie made from grapes grown in the acclaimed Grande Champagne region of Cognac that has been passed through four generations of Cellar Master.

This began in 1974 with the 250th anniversary bottling. Now, each time a Coupe is released, the Cellar Master uses the previous batch and adds its personal twist. They then hold back part of the new batch for the next Cellar Master to use. And so on.

The Rémy Martin Coupe 300 Ans (300 Years) is rich, decadent and classy, with leading notes of candied orange, dried fig and drying woody spice. These are supported by further notes of fresh honeycomb, butter croissant and milk chocolate.

C’est superbe!

Volcan | Blanco Tahona

The tequila category is currently experiencing huge growth, and super-premium products are driving it. The world seems to have developed a thirst for expensive tequila, and it is yet to be quenched.

Volcan is one brand that has tapped into the movement. The distillery uses traditional methods to make its products, including clay ovens to cook their agave, a tahona to crush it and extract the juice once cooked, and open-top fermenting tanks. The tahona, which gives its name to this release, is made of volcanic stone.

Blanco Tahona is tequila with a difference. Not only does it taste superb, but the bottle is a work of art. Tall, elegant and striking. You know you are in for a treat when you open it.

The tequila is a blanco, meaning it has had no ageing, and is bright and vibrant. Earthy and dusty spices lurk and accentuate a delicious sweetness, while there are herbal and mineralic qualities, too.

A great sipper, especially over ice with a slice of citrus peel.

Whisky 1901 | The Collection Part 1

This Scotch whisky marks the first foray into the world of bottling by whisky cask investment company Whisky 1901. The Collection will be an ongoing series of single-cask single malts, selected from some of the best casks within the company’s extensive portfolio.

The inaugural release is from the Speyside distillery of Glenburgie. The single ex-bourbon cask was distilled and filled in 1988 and bottled at 35 years of age. There are just 263 bottles.

An encouraging early sign is that the whisky has already won several awards in some of the world’s best spirits competitions prior to release, including a Gold Medal at the Global Scotch Masters.

The nose leads with a luscious mix of peachy tropical fruit, vanilla and delicately toasted spices. These evolve further on the palate, which feels soft and viscous. Notes of milk chocolate, tarte tatin and old cigar box then develop, as do hints of apricot jam and cocoa.

A stunning debut.

Wild Turkey | Master’s Keep 10 Years Old ‘Triumph’

This marks the 10th bottling in the esteemed and multi-award-winning Master’s Keep series from the iconic Wild Turkey distillery in Lawrenceburg, Kentucky. Since its inception in 2015, the Master’s Keep has continually shown the luxurious side of the brand, and this edition is no exception.

The Triumph is a 10-year-old rye whiskey – the oldest age-stated rye the brand has ever released and just the second rye in the series. It feels creamy and soft in the mouth, with an almost oily texture. There are notes of honeyed green apple, orange zest and milk chocolate, which are wrapped in a warm blanket of gentle spices – think black pepper, caraway and ground ginger – with a lovely herbaceous and menthol-like finish.

‘Triumph’ was certainly the correct name. This is rye whiskey at its very best.
