Steve McQueen’s 1970 Chevrolet K5 Blazer Is Up For Auction

Despite having passed away back in November of 1980, Steve McQueen remains a bonafide legend and a household name, lauded for both an illustrious career in film, and a major proclivity for vehicles and motorsport competition. As such, ex-McQueen-owned examples are pretty much always highly-valuable and highly-sought-after — with the American actor and motorsport icon’s personal Chevy K5 Blazer being no exception.

Built in St. Louis, this 1970 Chevrolet K5 Blazer CST was purchased new by McQueen — or rather by his company Solar Productions — in December of 1969. The Blazer was bought in order to be used as a tow and support vehicle for McQueen’s competition efforts in the infamous Baja 1000. In preparation for the grueling off-road race, the CST-spec K5 Blazer was treated to new Positraction differentials fore and aft,  Edelbrock valve covers, and a four-headlamp grille arrangement from a GMC Jimmy — modifications all performed/installed by McQueen’s race team. Powered by a 350 CI (5.7L) engine bolted to a TH350 transmission, this classic off-road truck example would eventually be put up for sale by Solar Productions after McQueen’s Baja campaign ended with a DNF.

In 1971, a Southern California resident would wind up purchasing McQueen’s old Blazer through a Penny Saver newspaper ad for a mere $1,500. The truck would remain in the possession of the buyer and was regularly used until 2001. In 2022, the vehicle would trade hands once again, though by this time its connection to McQueen had been discovered, massively increasing its value. Fast forward a few short years later to today, and McQueen’s old ’71 Chevy K5 Blazer CST is now slated to go under the hammer for the first time since leaving the factory in 1969. Sporting the VIN# KE180S124408, the vehicle only has 81,235 miles on the clock, too.

Steve McQueen’s 1970 Chevrolet K5 Blazer CST is scheduled to take its turn crossing the auction block at mecum’s upcoming Indy 2024 sale starting on May 17th.
