Seiko and Dodgers MVP team up on a pair of Prospex GMT divers with colorways inspired by the pitcher’s tea
The Los Angeles Dodgers capped off the 2024 season with a World Series title, and they owe much of their success this year to Shohei Ohtani. Leading up to his first postseason, the pitcher became the first-ever player in Major League Baseball history to record 50 home runs and 50 stolen bases. Oh yeah, and he earned his second unanimous MVP award (of 3 total) — the only player to ever do that. It’s safe to say Ohtani had about as good a year as you can as a professional baseball player.
And so, as 2024 comes to a close, the pitcher is capping off his own prolific year with a collaboration with fellow Japanese legend Seiko on a pair of Prospex watches sporting the colors of his current team.
2024 marked the 100th anniversary of the first wristwatch to bear the Seiko name. However, they didn’t enter the world of dive watches until 2025, making this new collaboration with Ohtani a twofold celebration: one for the baseballer’s remarkable season and one for the jubilee of the Seiko diver.
Based on the Prospex 1968 Heritage GMT divers, the two watches getting released are the SBEJ023 and SBEJ025. The major difference between the two watches is the dials, with the former sporting black and the latter featuring a white to match the black-colored stainless steel case and bracelet. You’ll also notice the blue ceramic bezels on both watches, bringing together the Dodgers-inspired aesthetic. Likewise, Ohtani’s jersey number, “17,” is depicted on the top of the crown.
Like other Prospex GMTs, these have 42mm cases with 200m of water resistance and a Caliber 6R54 automatic GMT movement. Around the outside of the dial, there’s a 24-hour flange to track a second time zone. This is either blue-and-white on the white variant or black-and-white on the black variant.
Aside from the differences in dial color, the hands also vary slightly depending on which watch you get. On top of the white dial, you’ll see the black outline on the minute and hour hands, with a black second hand and a blue GMT hand. Meanwhile, the black variant sports steel-outlined hands with a red GMT hand.
We see a lot of limited-edition timepieces each year, and often there will be nods — either subtle or overt — placed on the casebacks, especially with collaborative releases. However, Seiko opted to put Ohtani’s printed signature and “17” jersey number on the clasp of the bracelet rather than on the caseback, allowing wearers to show off the connection to the player without having to remove the watch altogether. The caseback does, however, feature the edition size and numbering (out of either 1,700 or 500), as well as “SHOHEI OHTANI LIMITED EDITION.”
Case Size: 42mm
Case Thickness: 12.9mm

Limited Edition?: Yes, 1,700 (SBEJ023) or 500 (SBEJ025)
Being a high-profile collaboration, the watches are naturally limited in edition size, with just 1,700 examples of the SBEJ023 and 500 examples of the SBEJ025 being produced. Regardless of variant, the 1968 Heritage GMT Shohei Ohtani 2025 Limited Edition is priced at 330,000 yen (~$2,101). Seiko Online Store Members can currently pre-order the watches through January 7 on Seiko’s Japanese website, with general reservations spanning from January 15 to February 6. No word yet on U.S. availability.
