Salomon Is Reimagining the Rugged Speedcross 3 Trail Runners

Back in the early 2000s, a Salomon designer (Reglan G Brewer) was inspired by the local races being held in the French Alps near Salomon’s headquarters in Annecy, and decided he wanted to leave his mark on the scene before parting ways with the label. The result was the Speedcross trail runners, a pair of lightweight mountain shoes that played an important role in popularizing the sport. The Speedcross 3s were a fan favorite that originally dropped in 2011, and Salomon just revived them with some modern touches.

This revival stays pretty faithful to the OG, but Salomon has hit it with some updates to give the silhouette a more modern look. For starters, you’re getting a beefier build that’s more in line with the Xt lineup, and it’s now a part of the label’s Sportstyle offerings. The runners boast a Sensifit construction meshed with a Quicklace system for a solid foothold, and a band around the base of the foot to keep your feet protected wherever you go. That reliable Speedcross lug pattern is back, providing traction on rough terrain, and the shoes are making their grand return in the original “Sulphur Spring/High Risk Red/Black” colorway that adorned the initial release in 2011.

It’s clear that Salomon took some notes from the Xt-6’s success and is positioning the Speedcross 3s as a sort of friendly rival. The silhouette still maintains its trail-running roots for sure, but the modern touches give it an edge that’s likely to result in more attention (especially in the fashion scene) compared to its more niche status back in the day.

The Salomon Speedcross 3 is available now for $140 in the new “Sulphur Spring/High Risk Red/Black” colorway featured here, along with the floral “Cement/Black/Orchid Petal” and an assortment of more subdued colorways, like the stripped-back “Vanilla Ice Falcon/Eden” and the blacked-out “Black/Black/Quiet Shade.”
