Since its inception in 2005, Red Bull Racing has become one of the most dominant forces in Formula 1. After cutting its teeth over its rookie years, the organization has managed to rack up an unprecedented number of both Drivers’ and Constructors’ championships — including securing both titles in the two latest seasons. Alongside some world class talent behind-the-wheel, Red Bull’s immense success is also largely owed to its state-of-the-art vehicle design and engineering.
And now, for the first time, the team’s engineering firm — Red Bull Advanced Technologies — has applied its expertise in building race cars to the creation of the first-ever publicly-available model, the Red Bull RB17 hybrid hypercar.
The Main Behind The Machine
Unveiled at the Goodwood Festival of Speed, the RB17 project was headed up by Red Bull Racing’s chief technical officer Adrian Newey. In May of this year, Newey announced that he would be departing from the Red Bull team, however, before doing so would be going out with a bang by debuting the RB17. In addition to his role as chief technical officer, Newey is also a talented race engineer, designer, aerodynamicist, and technical director — giving him the skills needed to bring this ambitious hypercar project to life.
“The RB17 distills everything we know about creating championship-winning Formula One cars into a package that delivers extreme levels of performance in a two-seat track car,” Newey explains. “Driven by our passion for performance at every level, the RB17 pushes design and technical boundaries far beyond what has been previously available to enthusiasts and collectors.”
The Framework
Developed and built at Red Bull Advanced Technologies’ 290-acre campus in Milton Keynes, the RB17 is constructed around a two-seat carbon fiber monocoque chassis that utilizes the vehicle’s mid-mounted engine as a partially-stressed member. Following in the footsteps of the Valkyrie — codenamed Project “AM-RB 001” — Red Bull Racing’s latest hypercar manages to tip the scales at under 1,984lbs.
Powertrain
Benefitting from various F1 technologies, the RB17’s powertrain consists of a naturally-aspirated 4.5-liter hybrid V10 with electric motor assist. The engine comes bolted to a six-speed sequential carbon fiber gearbox that sends power to the hypercar’s rear wheels. Spinning at up to 15,000rpm, the V10 is also fed via a central roof scoop.
Performance Capabilities
Unsurprisingly, Red Bull’s seven-figure, F1-derived hypercar offers some wildly impressive performance capabilities. Its 4.5-liter V10 makes a whopping 1,200hp, allowing the sub-2,000-pound vehicle to achieve a top speed of just under 220mph (or 217.5mph to be exact). Thus far, Red Bull has yet to reveal the car’s 0-60mph time, though we imagine that figure is somewhere between 2 and 3 seconds. Due to its extreme performance capabilities, the RB17 isn’t road-legal and can only be used on closed circuits.
Bodywork
Presumably crafted from carbon fiber, the RB17 features a super advanced bodywork design that clearly takes a page out of the F1 playbook. The thing comes loaded with a massive front splitter, an equally massive rear wing, a bevy of functional ducts and pass-throughs, and what Red Bull describes as “most advanced ground effect package available in a series production car.”
Bespoke-Built
Buyers of Red Bull’s new RB17 will be given a wide range of custom-configurable options when ordering the hypercar. Alongside selecting the vehicle’s livery, customers are also given upholstery and trim options and various interior material choices, plus a host of smaller details and can configured however the buyer sees fit. As such, no two RB17 units will be exactly alike, furthering the already-extreme-exclusivity of the seven-figure track weapon.
Alongside the hypercar itself, each RB17 specimen comes with a host of included goodies. One-of-a-kind driver development and tailoring is included where each vehicles is spec’d specially for each buyer/driver. Also included is access to various racing simulators and, on-track training, and a range of special track events held at some of the world’s most elite circuits, allowing RB17 owners to test their new ride at a myriad of iconic tracks. Because these high-dollar hypercars can’t be serviced by your average mechanic, each unit will be supported directly by the factory, with servicing and maintenance specifically tailored to cater to each customer’s usage of he car.
