We have all heard the expression: People come into your life for a reason, a season, or a lifetime. So, how do you know if your friendship with someone will become a lifelong connection?
There are many similarities between true friendships and committed partnerships. A strong foundation is built on communication, trust, and loyalty. A true friend will be there for you through good times and bad times. They will help you through your struggles and be by your side as you work toward achieving your goals. This must be reciprocated for a friendship to sustain longevity.
10 Essential Attributes That Make Up a True Friendship
- You have a mutual respect. Your values and morals are in alignment.
- There is support and appreciation for each other’s advice and guidance.
- You have each other’s backs and offer emotional support.
- You honour their boundaries.
- You accept each other’s differences and appreciate them for who they are.
- There is a non-judgmental acceptance of one another.
- You show up with consistency and stand up for them when necessary.
- There are no power struggles or control issues, and you are not competitive with them.
- You both contribute equally to your friendship, and you enjoy spending quality time together.
- There is an understanding of the need for space and independence. It’s not a possessive friendship.
A true friend does not hold grudges.
You both know how to say sorry and are willing to forgive when mistakes are made. There is no ongoing resentment or repetitive arguments. You are capable of repairing any issues quickly and maturely. There is compassion and understanding even when you both might not completely agree with their ideas or frustrations.
You are both able to move forward without hurt and anger because you talk through things with an open mind. You take turns hearing each other out and listening to any concerns. There is an understanding of why you both felt strongly about something, and you find a way to compromise as a team.
Do men and women have different priorities and expectations within their friendships?
Men are proud to have friendships that they can count on. They tend to hold onto their friendships for many years without significant change. There is less emotional conflict in how they stay closely connected. Men have similar requirements to have a solid friendship, but require less nurturing. There is minimal drama to deal with for the most part. When there is a disagreement, they often deal with it quickly and assertively.
Women can be more emotionally sensitive about certain issues, which can cause some tension in their friendships. Men still have their best friends for the long term, but quite often, there is a group of guys that hang out regularly. Everyone gets along without any possessiveness. I have often admired this amongst the men I know.

This has to be in alignment and is an important part of any true friendship. One person should not be consistently giving more than the other person. Balance is imperative in a long-term friendship. Being there for one another is what keeps a friendship strong. It is the key to a long-lasting connection.
True friends are great communicators. You have fun together and have a lot to talk about. You can pick up a conversation 6 weeks later as if no time has passed. You don’t take each other for granted, and you appreciate all the memories you continue to make in your friendship. There is also a respect for each other’s romantic relationships and the need for private time.
You both know how to offer gentle guidance when there are discrepancies in each other’s lives. You can talk about anything without harsh feedback. You feel safe with them and trust them with your secrets.
As life changes, true friends evolve together. They support each other through different stages and personal development. There is an understanding of what makes a friendship authentic and meaningful, which grows and matures over time spent together.
