Porsche Design’s Chronograph 1 Utility Limited Edition Sports Titanium Carbide Case

For those of you who only know of Porsche as the maker of sports cars, let us introduce you to Porsche Design, an offshoot of the German marque focused on making high-end, inspired accessories and gear for your personal life. Of course, the brand has been around since 1972 but remains a (relatively) low profile — although is well-known and beloved by watch enthusiasts. Its calling card is unequivocally its wristwatches, which were the first products released by the brand over five decades ago. Today, the label is paying homage to its past military models with the new Chronograph 1 Utility watch.

Once Porsche Design cemented itself in the watch world, it became a go-to for the U.S. Air Force and the West German Bundeswehr. The brand’s logo was supplanted by the word “Military” sometime in the late ‘70s, which this new chronograph release takes inspiration from. Limited to just 250 pieces, the Chronograph 1 Utility is the first time Porsche Design has utilized its proprietary titanium carbide material for a model not tied to a specific Porsche vehicle. Not to say this makes it more accessible, considering the edition size, but it does make the actual design of the watch more appealing to those who don’t want their timepiece wholly focused on a single nameplate (the previous use of titanium carbide was on a watch with some heavy Dakar 911 nods).

Coated in black for this release, titanium carbide is known for being very lightweight and scratch-resistant, and surrounds a matte black dial — like the ones popular with aviators in the ‘70s — with three chronograph registers like most other Chronograph 1 watches. Where the word “Military” has been applied in the past, there is now the word “Utility.” Likewise, the U.S. Air Force’s tiger logo has been replaced by the logo for Porsche’s Mankei, a venue/restaurant for Porsche enthusiasts near the brand’s Austrian studio. Underneath the proverbial hood, this 40.8mm case is the in-house WERK 01.240 automatic flyback chronograph movement. The watch comes with two straps: a leather strap inspired by PD’s military heritage and a white textile strap with the coordinates for the F.A.T. Ice Race in Zell am See.
