Just a couple of weeks after debuting its Cloudboom Strike for marathoners, On is back at it again with yet another version of the running shoe, now with LightSpray uppers, making these even lighter than before. The Swiss footwear brand has become a favorite of runners and Olympians alike and the Cloudboom Strike LS (for LightSpray) has already proven its worth on the feet of Kenyan runner Hellen Obiri when she won the Boston Marathon back in April. Let’s dive into these new running shoes and what makes them so special.

Explaining the LightSpray Tech

Uppers are a necessary part of the shoe-wearing experience, quite literally. However, performance footwear brands keep trying to come up with ways to combine the lightweight cling of socks with the support of shoes, and few have succeeded. Enter On’s LightSpray tech, which essentially aims to feel invisible on your feet. Minimizing parts and waste by cutting carbon emissions by 75% compared to other racing shoes, the material takes just three minutes to make, during which a robotic arm fuses 1.5km of mesh-like filament to the shoe’s midsole. Breathable and elastic, the innovative thermoplastic material utilizes a complex pattern that precludes any use of glue or seams, resulting in the lightest uppers the brand has ever made at just 30g (~1.05oz).

On Cloudboom Strike LS Basics

Aside from the brilliance of the laceless LightSpray uppers, the Cloudboom Strike LS sits atop two layers of Helion HF hyperfoam for ultimate energy return and impact absorption. Between the two layers is the carbon fiber Speedboard to help with propulsion. Meanwhile, the running shoe still benefits from On’s iconic CloudTec midsole for better roll-through and an outsole designed to increase ground contact in certain zones. Weighing just 170g total (~6oz), these racing shoes will feel like a second layer of skin.
