Omega Gives a Platinum Case and Bracelet to the Speedmaster Caliber 321 Moonwatch

If you’re a fan of the Omega Speedmaster Professional — or Moonwatch — there’s never really been a shortage of varieties on the market for you to choose from. But sometimes all you need is a simple material swap to take something from classic to ultra-luxurious.

For its latest Speedy iteration, the Swiss watchmaker has implemented a metal reserved for the most high-end timepieces.

From Steel to Platinum

Not much has changed with this new Speedmaster, but if you look closely, you’ll notice that the typical stainless steel material used for the case has been substituted with platinum instead. Topped with a ceramic tachymeter bezel insert (typically the bezel is usually made from aluminum), the chronograph doesn’t appear like it’s trying to do too much but certainly finds ways to add to its value.

Within the 42mm asymmetrical case design, it retains the classic aesthetic thanks to the black onyx dial but finds a subtle way to level this up by employing a lunar meteorite for the trio of subdials — a nod to the Speedy’s legacy with the Apollo missions to the Moon. This isn’t the first Moonwatch to feature meteorite on the dial (previously seen on the Speedmaster Apollo 11 50th Anniversary Limited Edition in Moonshine Gold) but it’s interesting how, here, it never serves to detract from the watch as a whole; the Moonwatch never becomes hyperfocused on its meteorite usage.

Finding More Upgrades

Platinum might look similar to stainless steel but it’s significantly more valuable. Likewise, the metal’s aesthetic appeal is obvious when you view it in person. To continue leveling up the watch, Omega uses 18k white gold for the applied indices and handset.

Powering the watch is the revived Caliber 321 manual-wound movement, as viewed through the sapphire exhibition caseback. Older versions of this caliber were used for the Apollo missions back in the day and has been given an 18k Sedna gold-PVD finish here.

Available with a matching platinum three-link bracelet, the new Moonwatch also comes in a leather strap version. However, the difference in price between the two references is more than $30,000, which is kinda crazy if you ask me. Imagine a world where a platinum watch bracelet costs 30 G’s. A similar version of this watch did come out in 2019 but that one didn’t have the platinum bracelet, a fact that Omega might be wielding for justification.
