Mercedes-AMG Unveils Hybrid E 53 for 2024

Mercedes-AMG’s E-Class continues to impress us with how much versatility it can get out of its range, from station wagons to sedans to coupes. But until now, there has never been an electrified version of the flagship executive car. Just this week, the German marque unveiled the E 53 Hybrid for the 2024 model year.

Tapping the same 3.0-liter six-cylinder as the E450 coupe, the E 53 pairs the combustion engine with a 28.6 kWh battery and 120-kW motor to make it a plug-in hybrid that can get up to 70 miles without any gas at all. To bump up the power, Mercedes-AMG has added some boost for a total of 577hp and 553lb.ft of torque, and a 0-to-60 of 3.8 seconds. There’s also a Race Start mode that can get you up to 612hp, which is around the exact same power as the all-gas V8 E63. Limited electronically, the top speed is ~174mph and ~87mph with electric power.

A spiritual successor to the GLE 53 Hybrid 4MATIC+, the E 53 Hybrid sports the general Mercedes E-Class design language and hallmarks such as the radiator grill and bumper intakes. Utilizing all-wheel drive with AMG Performance 4MATIC+, the track here is an inch wider with stiffer suspension and larger brakes. Even though the standard interior is the illuminated trim in gray open-pore ash wood, carbon fiber trim and performance seats are available as interior options, as well as the MBUX Superscreen with a passenger monitor. To power this up, there’s a 11kW on-board charger but a 60kW DC fast charger option lets you charge from 10% to 80% in just 20 minutes.

Expected to arrive in Q3 of 2024, the E 53 Hybrid will retail starting at $66,700. Head over to Mercedes-AMG’s website to learn more.
