Leica’s M11-D Digital Camera Removes the Display Screen for an Analog Experience

As hard as you try to replicate the analog shooting experience, a digital camera can only offer so much in the way of illusion. After all, features such as a digital screen can detract from spontaneity and the ability to focus on approaching composition and framing more intuitively. For the latest from its top-tier M11 series, Leica has ditched the display at the rear of the camera. Let’s take a look at the M11-D.

Leica M11-D Basics

It’s almost startling to see the back of the camera without a digital display screen. While the first digital camera to have an LCD screen was the Casio QV-10 in 1995, these became ubiquitous not even a decade later. However, serious photographers often still long for the ways of the past.

For Leica’s new M11-D, a large ISO dial is there in its place, letting you adjust the ISO from 64 to 50,000 — but don’t worry, you can still view your photos from the Leica FOTOS smartphone app if you still want, via Bluetooth or USB-C connectivity. You can also use this connectivity for photo transfers, remote control, and geotagging.

Such as the M11-P model (which had a digital screen), the M11-D boats the Leica Content Credentials, which rolled out last year as a way to encrypt the photos taken with the camera to protect their authenticity.

Other Features

Other features include 256GB internal memory, a 3GB cache, and image resolution options of 60, 36, and 18MP, as well as the full-frame BSI CMOS sensor with Triple Resolution Technology that’s become a hallmark of the M11 line. There’s a continuous shooting function where you can get 5 shots per second at 60MP. Also, the camera’s inherent qualities of the camera’s magnesium and aluminum housing allow it to be lighter in weight at just 19.05oz, which is 4oz lighter than the predecessor.
