Leica’s Q3 43 full-frame camera swaps the 28mm f/1.7 lens for a 43mm f/2 one for a tighter field of view.
Debuting in 2015, Leica’s Q series has become the legendary camera brand’s flagship full-frame compact range. And until this week, these models have exclusively come with 28mm f/1.7 lenses, which are more than serviceable and about as versatile as you can get. However, with the newest Q3 43 model, Leica increases to a 43mm f/2 lens. Let’s see why this matters…
Essentially, a larger lens diameter means it can take in more light, which allows the photographer to capture objects close up more efficiently. This is balanced appropriately with a slightly higher f-stop (f/1.7 to f/2). Also, as Leica puts it, “the 43mm standard focal length mirrors the natural perception of the human eye, making the Q3 43 perfect for street, travel, and event photography, as well as capturing expressive portraits.” Essentially, the new lens is perfect for capturing things as our eyes see them, and in any lighting condition.
Aside from the obvious lens swap, the new Q3 43 is very similar to the 28mm lens version. This includes the full-frame BSI-CMOS-Sensor with Triple Resolution Technology (with 60MP, 36MP, and 18MP capability), the 50 to 100,000 ISO range, the tilting 3-inch display with 5.67MP OLED viewfinder, 8K video capability up to 30fps, Leica’s Hybrid Autofocus System, and overall design language. Even the dimensions of the camera itself are about the same, with the exception of the permanently fixed lens, which is just 5mm longer. And of course, this comes with integration with Leica’s FOTOS app.
The main difference, as far as I can tell, is the dark gray textured leather wrapping the front of the camera. Oh, and there’s also the $600 increase in its price tag. Either way, this long-anticipated update answers customer requests for a larger lens, so I’m sure there are many serious photographers who will be willing to pay the difference.
