In 2015, LEGO joined forces with McLaren Automotive to deliver a mini brick-built version of the British marque’s P1 supercar. Part of LEGO’s Speed Champions lineup, the McLaren P1 kit was comprised of 168 pieces and spanned 5” in length. After the success of this kit, the Danish toy brand has now opted to link up with McLaren once again, this time to produce a larger, markedly more detailed version of the hybrid flagship supercar with the new LEGO Technic McLaren P1.
The Basics
Joining LEGO’s Lamborghini Sian, Ferrari Daytona SP3, and Bugatti Chiron from the brand’s Technic Ultimate Car Concept Series, the McLaren P1 is a 1:8th scale model that stands at 6” tall, 10” wide, and 24” long. Aimed at builders aged 18 and over, the kit is made up of nearly 4,000 pieces (or 3,893 to be exact).
Functional Elements
Set atop a replica set of the supercar’s 10-arm wheels, the LEGO Technic McLaren P1 rides on a working suspension and comes outfitted with a rear spoiler with an adjustable wing angle. One of the main highlights on the Technic P1 is its dihedral doors — functional items that required LEGO Technic to engineer a new mechanism in order to bring to life. The doors open to reveal a detailed cabin complete with race seats, a functional steering wheel, and a working seven-speed transmission.
Other Odds & Ends
In order to bring the Technic P1 to life, LEGO’s designers also worked hand-in-hand with McLaren in order to churn out a model-accurate version of the Volcano Yellow that the 900-hp supercar is offered in. Positioned aft of the cabin is a mini replica of the P1’s twin-turbocharged 3.8-liter hybrid V8 engine, which sits under an open and closable rear hatch. Like other high-end LEGO Technic cars, I also imagine it’s only a matter of time until the aftermarket sector starts selling LED lighting kits and remote control conversion kits.
What Makes It Special
There are several factors that make LEGO’s latest Technic car particularly noteworthy. Alongside the slew of functional elements, this kit is made all the more impressive by the fact that it arguably does a better job of recreating the car’s design than any other LEGO Technic vehicle — leaving little to no doubt as to what McLaren model it’s supposed to be. Also of note is how meticulously detailed the entire set is. Tiny elements such as the P1’s recreated head and taillights, the car’s central roof scoop, and aero kit have all been brought to life. And, while minor, these details collectively elevate the kit quite a bit as a whole.
