U.K.-based Kudhva made smaller, portable versions of its lofted cabins with sturdy aluminum frames and canvas shells.
Above-ground tents can be as useful as they are fun when camping in the wilderness. For one, you’re able to obviate any wet terrain when sleeping. And also, small critters are much less likely to wander into your dwelling when it’s lofted. However, while small differences make certain raised tents better than others, most of them won’t be winning any design awards any time soon.
That’s where the Kudhva Kanvas comes in. While the tree tent boom has died down and rooftop tents have proved to be more niche than people thought, Kudhva has decided to make a durable, lightweight, and easy-to-setup option for people who still want to sleep above ground.
A few years back, Louise Middleton commissioned New British Design for a U.K. wilderness hotel made up of treehouse-style tents and cabins with angular designs. The campsite is called Kudhva (Cornish for “hideout”) and visitors can spend time in nature in one of the most unique ways possible.
Well, since 2019, fans of the wilderness hotel have been calling Kudhva to create a more portable option for purchase. And so, after three years of testing, the K-Tent was born.
The K-Tent was designed to mirror the architectural ethos of the larger cabin units, and with the same proportions. Adapting to various terrains, the unit stands atop its tripod legs which can adjust individually while also eliminating the large ground coverage of a traditional tipi, which runs the risk of damaging foliage and wildlife.
Sleeping two people comfortably, the unit is constructed using recyclable aluminum for its frame, which is then wrapped with durable canvas made of 407g/m2 Regentex poly-cotton fabric for an overall weight of about 705lbs. While not necessarily a breeze to toss into the back of your pickup truck, the K-Tent can still be easily set up by a team of 2 people in around 30 to 45 minutes. Kudhva suggests finding a spot to leave the tent up all season long and rent it out Airbnb style.
A non-slip aluminum ladder gives you access to the loft tent, but the canvas wrap extends below so you can keep some gear protected underneath your tent.
With a maximum height of 3.6m (~12ft), the K-Tent offers unparalleled views of your landscape, and at a raised elevation. You can sleep worry-free at nighttime and then wake up in the morning to a beautiful sunrise, wandering out onto the extended hexagram ply deck area for a morning cup of coffee. For extra protection, the canvas provides zippered closures as well.
