Kodak Revives Super 8 Camera with Digital Features

In 1965, Kodak debuted its innovative Super 8mm film, which would go on to revolutionize the industry as a whole. Giving people, for the first time, the ability to make home movies themselves, the format would eventually get the addition of sound-on-film in 1973, engendering an entirely new generation of creators who could now make their own short movies and learn the art of filmmaking without needing tons of money upfront. There’s even a sub-genre of cinema called SOV (shot on video) movies, which has Super 8 to thank. Over the past couple of decades, Kodak had been phasing out their Super 8 stock but has now unveiled a new product that may just shake the dust off the format.

In development for years now, Kodak’s new Super 8 Camera will have the tactile experience of using an old analog Super 8 but with some digital bells and whistles. Recreating somewhat of the experience of using a mirrorless camera, the handheld unit has a 4-inch LCD viewfinder display that swivels for more shooting angle options and features a menu full of filming options. Thanks to the 14:9 “extended gate” film stock, which allows for an image that’s 11% larger than traditional Super 8 stock, you are able to adjust the aspect ratio to 16:9 widescreen and optimize the visual resolution. You also have the flexibility to intercut your footage with other media capture formats.

Equipped with both a pistol grip underneath and a top handle with an integrated run button, the new camera comes with an SD card slot for audio recording overlays and firmware updates. There’s also the ability to interchange the C-mount lens from the detachable wide-angle 6mm 1:1.2 that it comes with. Likewise, Kodak is saying that this is the first modern Super 8 camera with crystal sync at 24 and 25fps, plus over- and under-crank at 18 and 36fps.

If you’re interested in buying one of these Super 8 Cameras, Kodak will be releasing them in limited quantities at a later date for $5,495. You can sign up for a priority spot now.
