Hoka’s Kaha 2 Frost Moc GTX Are Slip-On Hiking Boots with Insulation

While the category of camp slippers and mocs have certainly seen an upward tick in recent years, slip-ons and hiking boots have remained mutually exclusive, until now.

A few years back, Hoka debuted the GORE-TEX-lined Kaha hiker, followed by the Kaha 2. Now, however, the footwear brand is trying something entirely new and bold with its Kaha 2 Frost Moc GTX shoe, which not only gives you winter readiness for the outdoors but does so without any laces.

Hoka Kaha 2 Frost Moc GTX Basics

Hoka’s quick rise to ubiquity has been the stuff of legend, doing so with its super comfortable footbeds, all-around great construction, and distinct, accessible design language. All three of those attributes come into play for the Frost Moc, a cold-weather mid boot with a whopping 300g total, 100g of which is PrimaLoft Black.

Like other Hoka models, there is an assertive aesthetic at play, here with the triple chevron wings across the top of the uppers, rather than the quilted display on other insulated shoes.

Rated to -25ºF, the main shell here is the polyester ripstop upper back by a waterproof-breathable GORE-TEX membrane with an addition 200g of insulation. You also get a polyester-based stretch-fleece top collar to keep your feet closed off. Rather than standard laces, you get a quick-lace bungee toggle which a lot of lace shoes are adopting these days anyway.

Protecting your foot up top is a Hubble Heel and TPU film toe cap. Underneath your foot, you get a dual-density CMEVA midsole and MetaRocker for underfoot protection. You’re also walking on a Vibram Megagrip outsole with 5mm Traction Lugs for grip.

What We Think

It’s yet to be seen just how effective these Frost Moc GTX boots will be in terms of support on the trail but they seem to have all the ingredients for a warm and comfortable companion for the campsite at the very least. I’m interested in the bungee laces, which beats other slip-on options that merely rely on a stretchy collar without any tightening elsewhere.
