10 Best Denim Jackets for Men: As Rugged as You Roll in 2024
Dec 11, 2024Hoka Kaha 3 GTX Hiking Boot
Hoka unveils its long-awaited Kaha 3 GTX, with GORE-TEX Invisible Fit, a new sugarcane-infused midsole, and a single-piece outsole for durability.
Hoka’s are inarguably one of the most popular hiking boots on the trail these days, with different options for you to choose from depending on your experience level and price point. The Anacapa is a fantastic everyman hiking boot with a relatively accessible sub-$200 sticker. However, at the top of the line for more experienced adventurers, you have the Kaha range.
Hoka recently debuted winterized, PrimaLoft-injected “Frost” versions of the Kaha 2 GTX, implying these will still be on the market for some time. But now, the footwear brand has dropped the much-anticipated Kaha 3 GTX.
With the new edition comes some improvements, obviously. Hoka stated that with the implementation of the GORE-TEX Invisible Fit — a first for any of the brands hiking boots — the Kaha 3 GTX should be less bulky inside and fit much better. There’s also the addition of sugarcane in the dual-density EVA midsole that’s apparently bouncier than before, a single-piece outsole design to improve durability, and molded TPU for the heel counter and toe cap for extra protection and support.
If you aren’t aware, GORE-TEX is a waterproof membrane that’s slightly porous so that your feet will remain ventilated but without letting moisture inside. This makes these boots fantastic for rainy days or hiking nearby waterways.
Like the previous version, the uppers are made of nubuck leather that’s been gold-rated by the Leather Working Group and the outsole is Vibram Megagrip with 4mm Traction Lugs. I’m also glad the quick-lace metal top hooks are back since the ones Hoka’s made in the past are arguably my favorite. You’ll also get the poured PU sockliner that helps with all-day comfort on the trails so that you’re not forced to end your hike before you want to.
From a visual standpoint, I think I may still prefer the Anacapa 2 Mid over the Kaha 3. However, the third-gen Kaha does get some stylistic improvements over the outgoing model. For one, the uppers are much less busy and actually sport a touch of the wave pattern that I love from the Anacapa — so good news if you’re sticking with the mid-level model for its looks alone. The sole is also more stylized and looks less like a dad shoe. I also love how the fabric around the ankle is less porous mesh and more spandex-looking polyester.
On the flip side, however, you do have more aggressive branding from Hoka, with the brand name moving from the side of the heel to along the side of the foot. Either way, these boots are a huge aesthetic improvement over the Kaha 2.
