G-SHOCK has been releasing about one NASA-themed watch each year since 2020, and almost all of them have used bright colors like orange (inspired by space suits) or white (also inspired by space suits). However, for its fifth release this year, the Casio sublabel goes a bit darker with its first all-black NASA watch in the series. We present to you the new GW6900NASA24-1.
G-SHOCK and NASA
G-SHOCK won’t be the first watch brand you mention when discussing NASA. The United States space program has had close historical ties with Omega and Breitling. But the Casio sublabel is actually one of the approved watches for official use for NASA astronauts (although spacemen can technically use personal timepieces if they wish as well).
As you may know, G-SHOCK has only been around since 1983 — long after the final Apollo flight in 1972 — so several other watchmakers were able to get in good with NASA decades before. However, considering the absolute indestructibility of the Japanese brand’s timepieces and their reliability, they can make superb choices for space flight. Over the years, dozens of G-SHOCKs have been worn by crew in space. In fact, astronaut Scott Horowitz was known to frequent the 6900 models specifically during his Space Shuttle missions in the ‘90s and ‘00s.
G-SHOCK GW6900NASA24-1 Basics
While the first three NASA watches from G-SHOCK used the 5600 digital line as their base, the 2023 white-and-gray reference started the series in a new direction by using the ever-popular 6900, which is the Japanese watchmaker’s best-selling line these days.
For this 2024 release, G-SHOCK uses the iconic retro Casio calculators as inspiration for the design as a nod to the calculations required in space flight. The homage is given in the mostly-black color scheme with accents of mostly white and red along the way — although blue and yellow come out to play too to recall the old buttons on the calculators.
There’s also a cool backlight display that says the word “Gravity” and the mathematical equation for gravity, “F = (m₁m₂)/R².” There’s some more math on the caseback with the word “Impact” followed by “E = ½ mv².”
The rest of the watch is business as usual, including the 53.2mm x 50mm resin case and band with 200m of water resistance. Features of the watch are the multi-band 6 atomic timekeeping, world time function, 1/100-second stopwatch, four alarms, and solar-powered movement.
