Everything You Ever Wanted To Know About Manscaping

Back in the 70’s, a hairy chest was a sign of virility, with women swooning over Tom Selleck’s jungle of chest hair. But these days, body hair is no longer in fashion, with women preferring their men to be clean and well-groomed all over, much the same as we’ve come to expect from them. And so began the manscaping movement.

Now you might be asking yourself, what exactly is manscaping, and why should I be concerned about it? Merriam Webster defines manscaping as “the trimming and shaving of a man’s body hair so as to enhance his appearance.” Basically, any grooming you do on your body that isn’t your face. We’re talking chest, arms, stomach, back, legs, and even your nether regions.

When it comes to manscaping, there isn’t a one-size-fits-all rule, it really comes down to your (and your partner’s) personal preference, and it may vary from one body part to the next. Case in point, I trim my chest hair and pubes, but I wax my back completely, and I leave everything else alone. Others might take a razor to ALL of their body hair. There’s also depilatory creams, threading, sugaring, and even laser hair removal. The possibilities are endless.

As I mentioned above, manscaping often involves shaving or trimming.. down there. In fact, in a 2017 study from the JAMA Dermatology Journal, 66.5% of the men surveyed reported having trimmed or shaved below the belt at least once in their life. And those numbers have likely gone up since then. So if you haven’t trimmed the bushes before, there’s nothing to feel weird about, as it’s very normal these days.

One of the biggest questions I get asked is why you’d want to shave/trim your pubic area. One of the main reasons why men choose to do so is for improved hygiene, as the pubic area can be a breeding ground for bacteria and such, which can lead to unpleasant odors and infections. Excess hair can also be uncomfortable and irritating, especially during physical activity or in hot weather. And of course, many guys just want to look bigger – If you cut an inch, you can ‘grow’ an inch … if you know what I mean.

So where do you start? First things first, take a good hard look in the mirror and identify your problem areas. Does your chest resemble Chewbacca’s? Is your armpit hair peeking out when you wear a tank top? And what’s going on down below? This isn’t the 70’s, if it looks like your junk is sporting a ‘fro, that’s just not going to fly with the ladies. You’ve also got to decide how much hair you want to leave behind – None, stubble, or what length.

Once you’ve decided what areas you want to address, you have to decide how you’re going to go about it. Many guys might just reach for a razor and go to down, but trust me when I tell you that electric clippers specifically designed for manscaping are a much better option. With regular shaving, you’ve got to worry about razor burn, cuts, infections, ingrown hairs, and more. But with an electric trimmer, it’s quick and effortless, without any of the maintenance that you have to worry about when shaving.

It’s all about having the right tools for the job, especially when you’re talking about sensitive areas like your groin, as the last thing you want to do is nick or snag yourself.. Ouch! That’s why I recommend Happy Nuts, as they offer a variety of men’s grooming products that are specifically designed for use below the belt.
