Dust Moto’s Hightail is an All-Electric, American-Made Dirt Bike

Billed by the brand as “the funnest bike ever made,” we’ve been following Dust Moto’s foray into the electric motorcycle space closely for the past year – including the unveiling of their initial Model_1 prototype that debuted earlier this summer.

Now the fledgling American start-up is back with the full production version of their all-electric dirt bike. Crowned the Hightail, Dusto Moto is finally ready to take center stage with the MX’er gearing up for a 2025 release date.

Novice-Friendly Motocross

At its core, the Hightail is a beautifully designed all-electric off-road motorcycle with a single goal in mind – to bring two-wheeled off-roading to the masses. To achieve this goal, Dusto Moto opted for a much shorter 55.1”wheelbase (roughly 2 inches shorter than the average 250cc dual sport) and a slightly lower standover height. But, the real barrier to entry for many comes in the form of your traditional clutch/gear shifter setup.

Of course, being an EV dirt bike, the Hightail is completely absent of any clutch, gear shifting, or foot controls making it a compelling option for anyone who’s been looking to hit the dirt roads but didn’t grow up riding dirt bikes. Simply twist the throttle and you’re off. The electric drivetrain is also virtually maintenance free – no oil changes, air filter replacements, etc.- which adds to the care-free nature of both ridership and ownership.

Silent, but Deadly…Powerful

The Hightail might be an EV, but don’t let that fool you, this thing packs a punch. Powering the 2-wheeler is a 4.4kWh removable battery that’s good for 42 horsepower and just over 485 lb-ft (660 Nm) of torque. And while the swappable battery is incredibly durable, carries an IP67 waterproof rating for all-weather-condition riding, and maintains 80 percent of its capacity over 600 discharging cycles, it can be easily swapped out in just under 60 seconds when the time comes.

The Hightail offers up nearly two hours (or 40 miles) of continuous riding at speeds averaging 25mph and has a top-speed of 75mph. Once depleted, the battery can be recharged from 0 all the way to 100% in about four hours.

Lightweight, Manageable and Maneuverable

Built on an all-aluminum frame , the 2-wheeler tips the scales at just under 220 pounds, and comes with optimized linkage and tuned dampers with a 260mm travel at the front and 285mm of travel at the rear for a setup that’s fully dialed in for the trails, straight out of the box.

Made In America

Committed to manufacturing their bike in America, Dust Moto knew they couldn’t go at this task alone. To help them navigate the complexities of US manufacturing, they teamed up with Bloom, an EV manufacturing company based in Detroit, the automotive heartland of the country.
