Skeleton watches are more than just an outlandish design aesthetic but a celebration of the intricate details that go into making one of these sophisticated timepieces we’ve adorned our wrist with. With its latest Octo Finissimo models, Bulgari is having some fun with the skeleton concept in that they’re not skeleton watches at all. Rather, sketches of the movement are depicted on the dials, blueprint-style, proving that even ultra-luxury timepieces can be a bit quirky at times.

Few modern watch lines are as legendary as the Octo Finissimo, which has accumulated eight world records in just over a decade. For the collection’s 10th anniversary in 2022, Bulgari debuted its first Sketch version, which placed the original design sketches of the chronograph underneath functioning hands. This time around, as the Italian watchmaker celebrates its own 140th anniversary, the latest Octo Finissimo Sketch pieces showcase the movement’s design as though you’re looking at it from the back. Aside from showing you the rotor and dial plate, it also points out things like the jewel count and one of the rubies. If merely a drawing of the movement isn’t enough for you, you can turn the watch over and see it firsthand via the exhibition caseback.

Like the previous Sketch edition, this version runs on the Caliber BVL138 automatic movement and is housed in an integrated 40mm case, in either stainless steel (limited to 280) or 18k rose gold (limited to 70). There’s also a third watch in this series that’s yet to be revealed (only a sketched depiction is available as of right now): a 43mm stainless steel chronograph GMT in steel, which is limited to 140 pieces.
