BMW Unveils 2025 R 1300 GS Adventure

In 1980, BMW forever altered the motorcycling landscape with the release of the R 80 G/S. Widely considered to be the first true adventure bike, the Gelände/Straße (German for “Terrain/Street”) model quickly proved its capabilities by winning the Dakar Rally the year after its debut, before going on to repeat the feat for three consecutive years in ’83, ’84, and ’85. Nearly four-and-a-half decades after its debut, the G/S remains in production today, now in its seventh-generation form with the R 1300 GS. After the R 1300 GS debuted last year, we knew it was just a matter of time before the Bavarian brand would be releasing a more hardcore, off-road-ready, rally-inspired Adventure spec — a long-running version of the G/S that’s been offered since the ’99.

And fast forward to today and that day has finally come as the company has just pulled the cover off of the new 2025 BMW R 1300 GS Adventure.

Chassis & Suspension

Unveiled at BMW Motorrad Days in Garmisch, the R 1300 GS Adventure is constructed around a two-piece chassis with a new, more heavily-reinforced subframe. Using the bike’s engine as stressed member, the frame comes paired with BMW’s EVO-Telelever front suspension and a EVO-Paralever rear unit bolted to a cast aluminum single-sided swingarm.

Outfitted with Electronic Dynamic Suspension Adjustment as standard and able to be fitted with an optional adaptive vehicle height control system, the Adventure-spec’s suspension affords 8.3” of travel out front and 8.7” in the rear.

The Engine

BMW’s new go-anywhere GS model is kicked along by an air and liquid-cooled 1,300cc twin-cylinder Boxer engine that features the Bavarian brand’s new and improved ShiftCam variable valve timing tech. Though it comes standard with a six-speed manual constant-mesh gearbox, the engine can be optioned with BMW’s new electromagnetic actuator-equipped Automated Shift Assistant semi-automatic transmission.

Regardless of transmission, the 1,300cc Boxer mill puts down 145hp and 110ft-lbs of torque — at 7,750rpm and 6,500rpm, respectively. While these numbers go unchanged from the standard R 1300 GS, they still make the R 1300 GS Adventure (and its base model counterpart) the most powerful Boxer engines ever offered on a GS model. The engine also benefits from the use of a new knock sensor system for that aims to bolster travel suitability.

TOuring-Spec Tank

Another major highlight on the R 1300 GS Adventure — and a major factor that separates it from the non-ADV-spec — is the go-anywhere model’s tank. Gaining an additional 2.9 gallons of capacity over the standard R 1300 GS, the R 1300 GS Adventure’s fuel cell now consists of a 7.9-gallon cell with an extra 1 gallon reserve. Made from aluminum that’s left on full display, the tank also comes fitted with a trio of integrated anchor points for mounting gear or luggage, plus the top of the tank has been capped off with a grippy rubberized veneer for setting items atop the cell while stopped. The cell can also be optioned with an available tank bag.

Hard Luggage

Though they aren’t offered as standard, BMW has designed a new suite of hard luggage for the R 1300 GS Adventure that features a 37-liter top case with a 17.6-pound load capacity, a left-side hard case with the same volume and load capacity, and a 36.5-liter right-side case with a 22-pound capacity.

Able to be optioned with bolt-on extension affording an additional 10 liters of storage space, the suite of aluminum hard luggage features reinforced bumper-guarded corners and integrated grab handles, plus all three items mount to a reinforced forged aluminum bracket system. Set on an anti-vibration mounting plate, the suite’s top box also sports integrated magnetic couplings that send power to an onboard USB charing socket array.

Wheels & Brakes

The ADV model’s braking hardware is comprised of a twin-disc front setup with 310mm rotors bit by quad-pot calipers, and a single 285mm disc out back with a two-piston caliper. Not only does the entire system come backed by the BMW Motorrad Full Integral ABS Pro system — which also comes as standard — but this cutting-edge assist has also been lean-angle-optimized to further bolster safety and stopping abilities. The big-bore adventure motorcycle rides on a cross-spoked wheel-set shod in all-terrain rubber, with a 19” front wheel and a 17” rear hoop.

Tech & Rider Assists

In typical BMW fashion, the R 1300 GS Adventure comes armed with a range of advanced electronics and rider assists that’s as abundant as it its state-of-the-art. These cutting-edge amenities include a radar-guided cruise control system, lane change warning alert, forward and rear collision warning systems, engine drag torque control, dynamic brake control, hill start control, dynamic traction control, and four switchable ride modes as standard including an off-road-specific Enduro mode. Also coming as standard are heated grips, a keyless ignition, and a live tire pressure sensor monitoring system.

Matrix LED Lighting

Like the standard R 1300 GS, the Adventure-spec sports the flagship ADV bike’s new X-shaped Matrix LED headlight design, though this main beam now comes supplemented via a set of partially-embedded auxiliary LED lights. The headlight can also be optioned with an available adaptive unit. What’s more, there’s also a new set of hand guards that come equipped with integrated LED indicators.

The Hard Numbers

Boasting a curb weight of 593lbs, the R 1300 GS Adventure features a payload capacity of 478lbs, allowing it to haul ample equipment and gear. The rider sits at a 35-inch seat height, while the bike stands at 62.5” tall, while spanning 89.76” in length and 39.8” in width. The new model’s wheelbase is 60.4” and its steering head angle clocks in at 63.8 °.

Optional Equipment & Accessories

Alongside the generous host of tech and add-ons that come standard — and the aforementioned host of optional goodies — the latest ADV-spec GS model can also be outfitted with a wide array of additional available items. This includes a headlight guard, a spoiler add-on for the windscreen, a dual silencer, comfort grips, heated rider and passenger seats, and a forged wheel-set.
