Few American icons embodied the level of cool confidence like Steve McQueen. Known for his influential sense of style, the actor and multipotentialite allowed his array of passions and hobbies to inform his indelible fashion choices, be it a TAG Heuer Monaco chronograph, a leather motorcycle jacket, or a simple pair of work boots. For the latter, McQueen often favored Red Wing for its timeless silhouettes and dedication to build quality.
When it comes to heirloom footwear brands, Red Wing stands out better than most. It recently partnered with The King of Cool’s granddaughter Molly McQueen on a limited-edition pair of its Classic Moc.
Part of Red Wing’s “Will Your Wings” campaign, these special Classic Mocs 6” are based on McQueen’s very own boots, such as the ones he famously wore on the cover of the August 1971 issue of Sports Illustrated, showing him romping around shirtless on his Husqvarna 400 Cross. This means reviving the Oro Legacy Leather uppers, the tan leather laces, and the Dull Gilt brass eyelets with speed hooks up top.
But these aren’t strictly vintage in appearance. Contemporary elements include the black Traction Tred rubber outsole, as well as McQueen’s “278” racing number and signature embossed on the heel. There doesn’t seem to be a lot of info about the release thus far but judging by the press photos, it appears that you will also get a special jacket patch as well.
As Molly puts it, “My grandfather had the unique ability to make everything he did look effortlessly cool. He was self-assured and confident, which is why people are still drawn to him today. But beyond the surface, he stood for something deeper — values that went beyond his style or his roles on screen.”
If you’ve ever worn a pair of leather boots — or any article of clothing or accessory — from one of your ancestors, you know the feeling of transcendence that gets evoked each and every time you lace them up. It’s as though you’re not only connected to all the stories that the shoes have lived through but you’re also adding to their story with your own.
Last month, Red Wing announced it would be stitching mini wills with each of its shoes. This means there will be tags where you can write who the boots are “Worn By” and who they will be “Left To” once you’ve passed away.
