On’s rise from a startup footwear brand in 2010 to one of the biggest names in the running world is downright impressive, to say the least. Building its shoe empire on the shoulders of its innovative CloudTec cushioning system, the Swiss firm really started to blow up following the 2012 London Olympics, when gold medal-winning triathlete Nicola Spirig continued to wear the shoes on her own feet. Now, in anticipation of the 2024 Paris Olympics, On is introducing a new marathon racing shoe, the Cloudboom Strike.
The latest in its Cloudboom line, which debuted a few years ago with its carbon fiber Speedboard for energy transfer, the Cloudboom Strike still favors a lightweight design meant for the long haul but makes a few tweaks from the already-existing Cloudboom Echo 3.
For one, the brand has retained the legendary CloudTec midsole, which has been “strategically positioned” for better efficiency and combined with its Helion HF foam for even softer push-offs and landings while maximizing energy return. Used as part of the innovative Bounceboard, Helion is a polymer-based superfoam developed by the Swiss engineers at On to blend the best of rigidity with flexibility when running.
For the new model, On has also lessened the amount of “non-enhancing performance components” to shed weight, while adding a new bounceboard and top midsole to maximize the shoe’s stack height (39.5mm). It also benefits from a molded heel, a supportive yet breathable single-piece mesh upper, and a wrapping cage system.
We see it in all of its shoes but let’s touch on what CloudTec is exactly. Inspired by a garden hose and the way that it squishes down but opens back up on its own, the holey soles that On has become known for are capable of absorbing impact from the ground which, in turn, reduces strain and increases the longevity of your run — perfect for a race that covers some 26 miles.
