First introduced in 1984 as what was essentially a Hilux with an extra row of seats under a fiberglass shell, the Toyota 4Runner has long been praised for its combination of practical daily-drive ability and genuine off-road capabilities. And after pulling the cover off of its Tacoma pickup counterpart last year, the Japanese automaker is now giving the motoring public its first glimpse of the all-new forthcoming fifth-generation 4Runner for the 2025 model year — marking the first comprehensive ground-up redesign of the platform since 2009.

Though some spy shots have been captured of a far-off 2025 4Runner wrapped in body-masking camouflage, this newly/released photo reprints the first officially-revealed image of the totally redesigned SUV. This lone photograph depicts a closeup of the aft-end of the forthcoming fifth-ken model, more specifically, zooming in on the bottom of the tailgate. Unlike previous iterations of the Japanese-made SUV that feature Toyota badging on one side of the tailgate and 4Runner badging on the other, the new model’s monicker is emblazoned in centered badged lettering  sandwiched between the license plate and rear bumper. 

While only a small portion of the vehicle can be seen, it’s abundantly clear that the next 4Runner will sport a markedly sleeker and more modern visual theme — not unlike the latest Tacoma and Tundra gens. We anticipate the upcoming 4Runner to feature the same turbocharged 2.4-liter inline-four i-FORCE and turbocharged 2.4-liter hybrid inline-four I-FORCE MAX power train options as the newest-generation Tacoma. Additionally, we wouldn’t be surprised to see the pickup’s new suspension and chassis designs carried over as well. Likewise, we also expect the 2025 4Runner to be offered across a range of trim levels, presumably including the range-topping factory-kitted TRD Pro and TrailHunter specs.

Thus far, this initial 2025 Toyota 4Runner teaser consists of just a single image and practically zero information, we expect additional sneak peaks and previews to trickle out in the months leading up to the gen-five 4Runner’s eventual release — just like Toyota has done for the latest generations of the Tacoma and Tundra.
