Ever since being featured on the wrists of Marlene Dietrich and Clive Brook in 1932’s Shanghai Express, Hamilton watches have been a staple of the silver screen. Appearing in plenty of Hollywood productions, such as Interstellar, Men In Black, Live and Let Die, and the most recent Indiana Jones installment, the timepieces have often gone beyond mere product placement to become integral parts of the plot for major motion pictures. Now, the American-turned-Swiss brand has released a pair of watches based on the one they did for the highly-anticipated Dune sequel.

Based on Frank Herbert’s seminal 1965 sci-fi novel, Denis Villeneuve’s Dune: Part One was released in 2021 to much acclaim (even earning a Best Picture nod). Being that it was just the first half of a two-part epic, fans have been on the edge of their seats awaiting the sequel, which premieres next month. For the film, Villeneuve tapped Hamilton to make a timepiece that would be used by the native people of Arrakis, called the Fremen. Designed based on sketches from prop master Doug Harlocker, the “desert watch” looks just as futuristic as you’d expect, although we, nor the people at Hamilton when they were tasked with the job, know yet what purpose the watch will serve in the movie.

As part of its sci-fi-esque Ventura collection, Hamilton has decided to make two production versions of Dune watch bearing a similar angular shape of the one seen in the film. Stretching 52mm across, the first watch, the Ventura XXL Bright Dune Limited Edition, is a quartz piece with an analog display housed in a black PVD-coated stainless steel case. Its most unique feature is the button on its left side which lights up the blue design on the dial, which is borrowed from the details of the prop watch. Also in black PVD steel, the second timepiece, the Ventura Edge Dune Limited Edition, features a similar shape but is “only” 51mm across. This one sports a digital display that reads the time in a vertical layout (hour on top, minutes on bottom) in blue LED (blue is the color of the Fremen’s eyes). The blue light brightens with the push of a button but then slowly fades rather than dimming abruptly.

Priced at $1,750, the Ventura XXL Bright Dune Limited Edition is limited to 3,000 pieces, while the Ventura Edge Dune Limited Edition is priced at $2,500 and is limited to just 2,000 pieces.
