Used on some level in watchmaking since the ‘70s, titanium has become significantly more prevalent as a case material over the past few years, in large part thanks to technological advancements that have made implementation much more practical and affordable. Titanium is loved not only for its distinct look but for how much lighter it is compared to stainless steel –– at around half its weight on average –– and how much more corrosion-resistant it is. Finding ubiquity in the watch world today, the material has been brilliantly used for the first time in Zenith’s Chronomaster Sport line.

Launched in 2021, Chronomaster Sport was a, well, sportier take on Zenith’s Chronomaster line that debuted in 1994. Immensely popular for the past few years, the Chronomaster Sport added a ceramic bezel that took apparent inspiration from the Rolex Daytona, for better or worse. However, with the addition of grade 5 titanium, the new model can further the gap and quiet any naysayers. 

With a design language that’s even more assertively Zenith than ever before, the Chronomaster Sport features a new dial color in “nickel-grey” sunburst but still possesses the brand’s signature multi-colored overlapping subdials which are now presented in three different tones of gray. The register style has been a signature since the El Primero A386 in 1969. Speaking of which, the titanium chronograph runs on the usual El Primero 3600 caliber, a descendant of the original El Primero which is an icon for being the world’s first automatic, integrated high-frequency chronograph movement upon its debut. As for this timepiece’s specs, it has the same 41mm case size but is 30% lighter than its steel counterpart. As for strap options, the watch comes with a titanium bracelet or an integrated black rubber strap. 

Priced at either $11,300 or $11,800 (depending on which strap option you choose), the Chronomaster Sport Titanium is currently available from Zenith’s website.
