There’s no wonder why all-black watches are so popular. You can wear them with anything, they have a stealthy, tactile edginess, and they’re just downright cool. that’s why a few years back in, when Seiko came out with the Black Series for its Prospex lineup, it was a way to bring an aggressive, decidedly modern aesthetic to traditional classics. Today, the Japanese watchmaker has brought three new models to the Black Series: the King Turtle, Sumo, and Solar Speedtimer.

Bringing the idea of nighttime visibility to your wrist, the Black Series aims to mimic the experience of looking through a night vision scope with its black hard-coated stainless steel case, matching bezel and dial, and green LumiBrite Pro lume on the hands, hour markers, and indices. Because of the dark dial, the reflection of the super-bright lume is low compared to, say, a white dial watch. Highlighting the series is the new King Turtle diver. Notable for its turtle shell-shaped silhouette, the timepiece (ref. SRPK43) houses its Caliber 4R36 movement inside this girthy 45mm case rated to 200m of water resistance and is adorned with a black steel bracelet. Like most of Seiko’s mechanical movements, the 4R36 is automatic-winding with manual-winding capabilities.

For a retro flare, you should take a look at the all-black Speedtimer, a chronograph that evokes the spirit of ‘60s and ‘70s auto racing. Unlike the two divers, this tricompax timepiece is powered by a solar movement that can last for 6 months fully charged. Rounding out this release is the sole limited-edition of the bunch: a Prospex Sumo diver (ref. SPB433) with the same 45mm case size as the King Turtle, as well as the 200m of water resistance and matching steel band. It’s powered by the Caliber 6R35, which has a whopping 70-hour power reserve. Only 3,500 of these were made.

Ranging from €700 (~$770) to €1,300 ($1,430), these Prospex Black Series watches should be available to U.S. markets next month. Head over to Seiko’s website to learn more.
