Now that outdoor gear is officially fashionable, many labels are trying to get in on the action, but it takes a genuine love of the outdoors and durable design to really break through the noise. Heritage brands like Danner have continued to uphold quality for nearly a century now, and relatively newer brands like the Colorado-based Topo Designs (which started in ‘08) are carrying the torch. Now, the pair is teaming back up on the Danner x Topo Designs Fall 2023 collection, a versatile cold-weather capsule featuring boots, a fleece, and a pack.

Kicking this collection off, the Danner x Topo Free Spirit hiking boots are the perfect showcase of the duo’s effort to deliver hiking-ready gear that’s just as useful on the trails as in the city. Up top, they come with a suede and textile upper, and they’re lined with GORE-TEX to keep everything dry. There’s a removable Ortholite footbed inside to support you during hikes, and a Vibram Overlook outsole to keep you stable on rough terrain. The Danner x Topo Mountain Fleece is another city-ready piece of hiking gear, featuring a classic, half-zip pullover look with a relaxed fit. It’s made of 100% recycled polyester and nylon, and features DWR nylon overlays on the elbows and the collar, along with a nifty little chest pocket. 

On top of the boots and the fleece, this collection also features a very retro-looking hiking pack made of 200D recycled nylon ripstop (with a 210D recycled nylon liner). You get 16 liters of space with an expandable front pocket, and it makes for a solid day pack thanks to the inclusion of a laptop sleeve, but it’s great for hiking, too, with a padded back and torso straps.
