OMEGA & ETNZ Team Up for 37th America’s Cup Edition of Seamaster Planet Ocean

The 37th America’s Cup isn’t until next year but that hasn’t stopped watchmakers from already preparing their own regatta timers in anticipation, such as Tudor’s recent model in tandem with Alinghi Red Bull Racing team. Now, it’s Omega’s turn to shine, with a spectacular take on the Seamaster Planet Ocean watch in collaboration with Emirates Team New Zealand.

If you’re unfamiliar with the America’s Cup, you might be surprised to discover that it’s the longest-running sporting competition to date. Competitive sailing in its own right dates back to the 17th century and requires a specific type of timer, called a regatta. Regattas are a type of chronograph complication, but typically feature a running seconds subdial and another that counts down minutes by increments of five to accommodate the peculiarities of competitive sailing, with no standing start grid or quick accelerations. Instead, yachts are asked to get as close to the starting line without crossing it by the time the race commences — a tricky task indeed, and one that requires a specialized tool like this.

Tapping the Deep Black version of the Planet Ocean watch, Omega has given this iteration of the ETNZ watch 600m of water resistance and a matte black ceramic case and dial with turquoise accents, most notably on the regatta dial and the 12 o’clock marker. The case itself is an impressive 45.5mm in diameter with a black unidirectional bezel and helium escape valve. Engraved with the Emirates Team New Zealand stamp, the caseback hides the Omega in-house caliber 9900 automatic movement with 60 hours of power reserve. The timepiece comes inside of a special commemorative box and is adorned with a black rubber strap with turquoise stitching. Three additional straps are included as well (one more rubber and two NATO).

The Seamaster Planet Ocean Deep Black ETNZ Edition is priced at $13,300. Learn more over at Omega’s website.
