Sometimes, differences in communication styles, emotional availability or expectations can create an imbalance in a relationship. This can leave one person feeling overlooked or unappreciated. Regardless of the reason, you still have to be on a similar path as a couple for your partnership to work. There have to be open conversations if you are feeling lonely in your relationship.
Keeping a relationship balanced and healthy is important. Both partners should be equally invested in giving and receiving. When there is equal compromise in a partnership, there is less sacrifice to deal with and fewer feelings of resentment over time. Both people feel valued and respected by one another.
What are some of the reasons that love can feel one-sided?
- There are different levels of emotional investment. One person may feel more attached, committed or focused on their relationship than the other.
- There are different expectations when it comes to communication, time spent together, affection, romance and intimacy.
- Daily priorities are not in alignment. One partner may be very focused on their career, while the other person prioritizes family or household responsibilities.
- Some couples feel that there is uneven effort made in their partnership. One person may feel they are always the initiator, the compromiser, or the supportive partner. There is a sense that the relationship rests on their shoulders.
- Things can feel one-sided when one person is invested in the relationship while the other is more casual about things.
- Different intimacy levels can also cause a couple to feel disconnected. This is a big issue in some partnerships, especially after spending many years together.
- The lack of communication can cause some couples to live separate lives within their relationship. They just come and go doing their own thing.
What should you do to prevent ending up in a one-sided relationship?
- Due to a communication breakdown, people aren’t always aware of what their partner needs. It is crucial to stay on top of things and hear each other in your partnership. If they are not a strong communicator, ask them questions to keep things on track. What is important to them in a committed relationship? What needs working on, and what makes them happy.
- A healthy partnership requires reciprocated effort. Shared responsibility consists of household duties, child rearing and planning social activities. When you regularly contribute on an equal footing, you both feel supported. You shouldn’t have to ask each other to step up; it should be a given.
- Do not take your partner for granted. Appreciate the effort that they bring to the relationship. Do little things for each other every day.
- Maintain your own life and respectful boundaries. Supporting each other’s outside interests, friendships, and activities is important. When all of this is respected, it works really well.
- Always take time to have conversations as a couple. Talk about what is going well and discuss things that need to be worked on in your partnership.
When you check in regularly with each other, you stay closely connected.
When you regularly check in with your partner, you’re not letting things go or letting resentment build up. You are addressing the good and the not-so-good situations that arise in any committed relationship. You’re not always going to be completely balanced in your partnership. Being aware of any changes will prevent even the small issues from escalating into bigger problems.
Do not shut down or go quiet on your partner. Healthy relationships are always communicative and supportive. How you deliver your concerns is also something to be mindful of. A gentle approach is always preferable to lashing out in a heated moment.
Remember that love is not about keeping score but about showing up for each other with consistency, respect and compassion. When both people are willing to listen, compromise and make each other feel seen, the relationship has the opportunity to grow stronger through life’s challenges.
