LG Officially Opens Pre-Orders for Its $60,000 Signature OLED T Transparent 4K TV

For an average person, $500 is totally reasonable for a television. This is a piece of furniture that gets more use than almost anything else in your house. However, it’s not technically an essential like a refrigerator, stove, or washing machine. Nevertheless, those wanting to shell out a bit more might go upwards of $2,000 for a premium TV set to get crisper images, quicker responses, and possibly better sound.

But what about $60,000? Well, that’s what LG has just listed as the price tag for its new Signature OLED T, a 4K TV with a transparent screen — the first of its kind anywhere in the world. While it certainly looks like fun in the press materials and I’m sure there will be plenty of wealthy consumers willing to pull the trigger, is a $60k TV actually better than a $2,000 one? Until more reviews roll in, the jury might still be out. But either way, we have some more details for you.

Uncovering This Unique Party Trick

Unveiled earlier this year at CES, the Signature OLED T is now getting a full release, with customers already able to pre-order the device. We already knew about the 77-inch screen and its basic 4K capabilities but with the latest press release, we can now confirm this is no longer just an ambitious concept.

Essentially, the self-lit television screen has the ability to switch between transparent and opaque (i.e., regular TV viewing) modes “at the touch of a button” thanks to a black screen that rolls down in the back. Transparent mode will make it look like your content is floating in mid-air. One of the brand’s photos shows a family watching whales swim across the city skyline in the background.

According to LG, “The screen not only creates the illusion of content floating in mid-air but also produces a mesmerizing effect by ‘merging’ the on-screen visuals with the surrounding space.”

What Else Does It Do?

Aside from the transparency trick, the Signature OLED T has some other features as well, including the T-Home, a “user-friendly interface” that’s basically the home screen displaying your apps and other services. There’s also the T-Objet, an Always-On-Display for displaying your personal photos, videos, and what have you.

Finally, the T-Bar is an info-ticker bar at the bottom of the screen when you’re not using your TV. This will basically allow you to see the view behind your television screen while still getting access to information such as weather, song titles, and device status.

Housed in the brand’s Zero Connect Box, which is a wireless setup that upscales the TV with customizable shelving on the side, the Signature OLED T also features an Alpha 11 Al Processor to optimize your viewing experience.

What Do We Think?

Perhaps more for impressing guests with how much money you have, the Signature OLED T might be little more than a $60,000 party trick. And unless you have something behind the screen worthy of looking at, you’ll just be looking at a blank wall.
