David Koma might dress the likes of Beyoncé and Rihanna as part of the day job but here, the designer eschews the world-tour leotards for something far more tasteful. The all-black look is easy-to-wear, while a simple tee cuts a more contemporary figure than a traditional shirt and bow tie.

Patrick Grant

Patrick Grant’s look might nod to the 1920s, but it’s by no means dated. The tux taps The Great Gatsby’s costume department, but it’s the overcoat that takes the spotlight – a sharp way of elongating your silhouette without stretching the dress code.

Jaden Smith

Finally, Jaden Smith is getting it right. After years of raising eyebrows on the red carpet (remember that psychedelic schoolgirl skirt?), Hollywood’s golden child strikes the perfect balance with this statement striped two-piece.

No eye-witness reports necessary: Derek Blasberg is cold, hard proof of pink’s prowess. Here, the powder shade is anchored with black tie staples, letting his look softly kill the red carpet. We rest our case.

The Worst

Marilyn Manson

The face paint, lipstick and Victorian boots may have been endearingly kooky in 1999. But this is 2016, and we’ve had enough of Manson’s snore-shock antics. More to the point, who even invited him anyway?
