They simply do not make them like this anymore. Before AMG was swept into Mercedes itself, it was one of the most radical tuners on the planet, rivaling any shop from Europe to Japan and the United States. In 1986, AMG had a secret program as the works engine supplier to Mercedes for European sports car racing and offered a 32-valve DOHC cylinder head kit for Mercedes’s M117 V8 engine. Combined with the AMG displacement upgrade to 6.0 liters, these motors could make over 375 horsepower. A so-equipped AMG E-Class earned the nickname “the Hammer” in a 1987 Road & Track test, cementing the car’s reputation. This 1986 500 AMG SEC 6.0 widebody is one of those cars and an ultra-low mileage example to boot. At the time of its latest registration in Germany, the car shows just 2,930 miles — and its condition proves the mileage. The intimidating bodywork is enhanced by a Blue-Black Metallic colorway over Anthracite leather interior, with the only modifications being a set of H&R springs and later four-piston Brembo calipers. The car goes to auction via RM Sotheby’s December 8th in New York.
