Needless to say, we’re pretty big Lamborghini fans here at Coolector HQ and though it seems unlikely we’ll ever be owning one, it certainly doesn’t hurt to look – especially when they look as cool as this 1976 Lamborghini Countach LP 400 ‘Periscopio’ by Bertone that is going under the hammer with RM Sotheby’s. This rare early “Periscopio” model comes with a captivating ownership history. Impeccably restored and boasting a lineage of only three private owners since its inception.
It has a guide price of $1.1-1.4M so it definitely doesn’t come cheap but it’s the sort of machine that commands respect and will be the pride and joy of any classic car aficionado. Resplendent in its original and highly appealing Blu Tahiti hue, this exceptional vehicle was equipped with air conditioning and two external rearview mirrors from the moment it rolled off the assembly line. Notably, it clinched an award at the prestigious 2013 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance. Representing the epitome of the Countach legacy, this specimen stands out as a testament to purity and desirability, retaining its original, numbers-matching engine.
The Lamborghini Countach boasts a futuristic wedge shape, but its bold design conceals its roots as a concept originating as far back as 1970. The inception of this sports car’s design occurred midway through the lifecycle of its iconic predecessor, the timeless Miura. Fueled by the competitive spirit against rivals, especially archenemy Ferrari in neighbouring Modena, Italy, Ferruccio Lamborghini initiated the project. The company, headquartered in Sant’Agata Bolognese, sought a contemporary interpretation for its flagship platform, giving birth to the legendary Countach.
After spending almost two decades in storage, the Countach was roused from its extended rest and revived by a Lamborghini specialist based in Toronto. Subsequently, it made a notable appearance at the prestigious Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance in 2013, garnering swift appreciation from the judges and securing a commendable second place in a fiercely competitive Lamborghini class. Two years later, the Countach shared the spotlight on an episode of Jerry Seinfeld’s “Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee,” featuring alongside fellow comedian Jim Carrey.
Exceptionally well-maintained in a captivating configuration, there’s unequivocal assurance that this outstanding LP 400 is prepared for additional concours events and delightful journeys on the open road. Undoubtedly, it stands as one of the most superb illustrations of the esteemed “Periscopio,” representing the purest and most coveted among all Countach models. Like what you see?
