Le Mans, Carerra, Martini — three things that make for an incredible race car, and this 1973 Carrera RSR has them all. Known as R7 by the team, this RSR was co-driven by Herbie Müller and Gijs van Lennep to a fourth-place overall finish in the 1973 24 Hours of Le Mans. Ahead of this Carrera were two Matra-Simca MS670B prototypes in first and third, with a Ferrari splitting the two Matras in second — heady company for a production-based race car. Several years later, the car was believed to have been destroyed in an accident or stripped for parts, with the truth being that it was quietly exported from Mexico to Italy and into the hands of a collector who owned the car for over 30 years. The car was returned to its 1973 Le Mans livery during a restoration in 2009, after which it passed to an owner in the US, before being offered for sale via Bonhams.
